We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dream (Dreamscape ASMR) a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dream, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Starting out, I had no formal education or training in film making or sound design, but I was determined to learn and improve my craft. Through countless hours of trial and error, learning from mistakes, and watching tutorials online, I was able to teach myself how to turn my vision into a reality. Since my work is largely based on sound design, learning professional audio production techniques was essential. I continue to study different methods used in the music and film industry to hone my sound. However, since the genre of content I create is a bit niche, I’ve had to do a ton of experimenting that resulted in failure. Currently, there is no guidebook on how to produce professional, high-quality ASMR like there is with other types of audio production.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I create cinematic, fantasy themed ASMR content where you, the viewer, are the lead character. My videos often entail whimsical scenarios that help the viewer feel calm. ASMR, or Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, is a phenomenon characterized by a tingling sensation that typically begins at the crown of the head and moves down the body. This sensation is triggered by specific stimuli, often through auditory or visual means, such as whispering, tapping, or soft spoken voices. ASMR has become increasingly popular in recent years as a way to promote relaxation and reduce stress, with many people turning to ASMR videos as a form of self-care. While the science behind ASMR is still being researched, it is believed to be related to the release of endorphins and the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system.
I first discovered ASMR in 2021 when I was going through a particularly stressful time in my life, and I found that watching ASMR videos helped me to quiet my mind and feel more at ease. I decided to try making this type of content on a whim because I wanted to help others find the same relief that I had experienced. Over time, I have refined my craft and found my own unique style. It brings me immense joy to hear from viewers who have found comfort and relaxation through my content.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, there are a few key strategies that have worked well for me. First and foremost, consistency is key. When I first started out, I made a commitment to post on a regular basis, and I stuck to it even when I wasn’t seeing immediate results. Consistency helps to build trust with your audience and shows that you are committed to them. Second, engagement is crucial. I make an effort to respond to comments as much as possible because I enjoy connecting with the people that support me. The “post and ghost” method does not create community–which is essential for long term success. Third, (and this is something I figured out over time) I focus on quality over quantity. Rather than trying to post as much content as possible, I prioritize creating videos that provide the most value to my audience. I started to see exponential growth when I slowed down and spent more time crafting my content.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a content creator, there are few things more satisfying than seeing my visions come to life on screen. From the initial concept to the finished product, I feel a sense of excitement and anticipation as each element comes together. It’s always quite fun to work on the visuals of my videos (I.E makeup, costumes, lighting, etc.). Every time I watch a completed project for the final time before posting it online, I feel a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that is hard to put into words. Even if no one watched my videos, I would still make them because I enjoy the process of creation so much.
