We were lucky to catch up with Drea Lopez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Drea, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue a creative / artistic path professionally was in high school. I had just come from a middle school where I, unfortunately, dealt with bullying. This new school allowed me a fresh start and new friends. One of those friends signed me up for the school’s talent show. She was one of the only people that knew I liked to sing and would write my own songs. I ended up winning the talent show and realized that it opened this opportunity for more people to talk to me, get to know me and my music. I, in turn, also became more open to expressing myself and making friends in this new way. The school started asking me to perform at events and I also started writing a lot more. Music became my instrument to make new friends and become comfortable in myself and my craft. Music was and continues to be the way I connect with people simply by being myself, writing what I feel and it’s my favorite way I keep make friends.
Drea, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Miami born Latina on a mission of connecting and inspiring other creative entrepreneurs. I’m normally known as a songwriter. I recently won my first Latin Grammy with Gloria Estefan’s album “#Brazil305” as a co-writer on the song “Cuando Hay Amor”.
Music is what kick-started my career in the arts, but my main focus has always been creating content that inspires people and connects them with like-minded individuals. In 2020 I started my own Podcast called “The Journey of Pursuit”. A show created to highlight creative entrepreneur’s journeys. A space for us to connect and inspire other creatives.
Over the course of a season, the podcast has charted on 30+ Apple Podcast Charts across the world ranging from Spain, Argentina, Indonesia, Denmark, Mexico, Venezuela, Canada and more.
From winning a Latin Grammy, to releasing a top charting Podcast, I’m on a mission to prove that nothing is out of reach when you believe in yourself and you set your mind to enjoying the journey, and I want to show others, they too, can do the same.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For sure, the connection with other creatives. There is something SO special about creating something with someone and not having to say anything at all, but just knowing how incredible it is to have created art together. For example, when I’m in the studio writing and we get to hear the finished demo, when you get to see your ideas come to life, everyone in the room can just feel that energy of creating something together that the world gets to hear and enjoy. Also, when I interview someone for the podcast, just the alignment in conversation when we talk about what we love to do, always leaves me feeling so inspired. There are so many incredible artists doing incredible things. Connection, connection, connection. We all have more in common than we think.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
You are never too old or too young to start doing what you love. Why not you? Why not start now? There is ALWAYS evidence that you can do whatever it is you set your mind to. We are our biggest obstacles and if we can work on tuning our mind to see possibility and opportunity, chances are we will continue taking the actions needed to get to our goals/dreams.
