We were lucky to catch up with Dre Dav recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dre , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
When I’m gone I want to be known for two things. 1 empowering others to never give up on their dreams, and 2 making dope music! I want to use the platform that I’ve built for myself to elevate my community and those closest to me. Music has allowed me to do things that “normal” people wouldn’t necessarily have the opportunity to do and have access to things people may not normally have access to. Sometimes I use that to help bring up other local artists, but my favorite thing is the ability to give back to the community. One of the biggest things is a toy drive that me and my music collective “The Flight Team” put together every holiday season. We partner with toys for tots to help collect donations for kids and families who may not have the extra funds to really celebrate the holidays. This year will be our 4th year running the “Super Fly Toy Drive” and over the course we have been able to raise tons of donations and help hundreds of families in the process.
Dre , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up immersed in music. My mom named me after a late friend of hers who played the drums, my grandmother is best friends with Otis Williams of “The Temptations” and a Detroit native so Motown was a must in the household. My stepfather is a jazz/funk aficionado so I spent all my summers as a kid going to concerts and the thing that captivated me was the way some of these artists could control the mood of a crowd.
As I got older I stayed invested in music and started writing and producing hip hop beats when I was about 13. Since then I’ve been able to play shows with artists like Curren$y, Smoke DZA, Ludacris, RBL Posse, and the list goes on. Growing up I was heavily influenced by Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, and Three 6 mafia and it definitely reflects in my own music. I even had the opportunity to collaborate on some music with the late Gangsta Boo of Three 6 mafia and more recently Curren$y. Those are definitely the highlights of my journey so far.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My business partner and Cofounder of Flight Team Entertainment is my best friend Neiko Thomas-Cook aka Dj Nitro. We met freshman year of high school, rode the school bus together everyday, and he would tell me all the time. “One day you’re gonna be a famous rapper and I’m going to be your DJ.” He was the first one to really believe in me so we set out to accomplish our goals together. Now we’ve played countless shows, he’s the godfather to my son AJ, and is the person I know I can depend on if I’m not on my A game. I’m not sure if everything I’ve done in my career would even be possible without him and I’m forever thankful to have him on my team.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I treat every fan like family. Anyone who’s ever been to a show would tell you that after I do my thing on stage I’m going to mingle with the crowd, take pictures, sometimes even sign an autograph or two. I try to remember everyone’s names if we meet so that I can greet them accordingly at the next show or even just running into them at the grocery store or something. I also give away a lot of free stuff at my shows. I try to make everyone in the crowd feel like they’re a part of something. And I think that’s what keeps them coming back.
