We recently connected with Drayghun and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Drayghun , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I realized the desire to pursue the arts was when I relocated to Miami, FL in 2001. My parents had recently separated and it was myself and 3 other siblings with my Mother. We were raised in religion and one day I had met a friend who attended the church we were all new to. We were hanging out shooting the breeze and he began singing. I never knew he could sing and the sound coming from him was beautiful and impacted me so much that I said within myself, “I am going to pursue music with the intention of giving listeners the same feeling I felt from hearing him sing.” The feeling was new, exciting and absolutely therapeutic. I knew then that music was powerful and I was going to use it to inspire, heal and give the listeners something to relate to.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
So as I mentioned within the first question asked, I got into music by hearing a friend sing which inspired me immensely. In 2005 I began writing songs whenever and wherever I could. I would write at work the most, it helped pass the time and also, these songs would come to me rapidly and I had to get them out. A few years later in 2007 I joined the Military and in 2010 I deployed to serve in operation Iraqi freedom. While overseas I ordered equipment for the first time to begin my very first recordings. I didn’t know what I was doing but my passion drove me to figure it out. I began my company Parlay 1 (an entertainment company) at the same time while deployed and returned safely in 2011. There in Orlando, Fl I organized house parties, club parties, performances. I brought in individuals who had a desire to do music. I engineered the records the best I could and we would take them to the club to perform. By chance the club we would perform at was named “Dragon Room,” this was before adopting the name Drayghun. Go figure. Fast forward to today my company is now called “Curio Giorgio Enterprises.” Our services offered within the company pertains to music, art, books, inspo videos and coming soon, fashion. The problems we hope to solve for clients is boredom! We are an entertainment company with a focus on spirituality. Who says growing and evolving can’t encompass fun as well. Our slogan is “Rare Creative Entertainment” What I am most proud of is the fact that I never gave up. I am 100% an underground independent artist, what most would call an underdog. It is the passion and intention that has kept me going and will continue to keep me going. I am also proud that I am a first time published author. I wrote a daily inspirational book titled “Pensieri Rossi: Red Thoughts.” It is now available on Amazon in Kindle and Paperback format. My author name is Nathanael G Davidson. What most don’t know is that while deployed I had correspondence with a legend. None other than Lil Wayne aka Tunechi. There’s more to the story but we can save that for another time. What sets me apart from all artists is my voice, it’s unique one of a kind and no other other artist in the world sounds like me nor has the style of music that I create. I have heard this countless times and I am finally embracing this.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As you now know I’ve been creating music since 2005 with the thought in mind, “Someday I’ll be given an opportunity where I’ll be signed to a major label.” In 2019 that opportunity presented itself. My brother and I at the time was asked to ghost write for a female artist and so we did. We took songs we recorded and gave it to her meanwhile writing for ourselves. It was an exciting time and we thought to ourselves, “We’re finally going to be recognized and get a deal.” Things turned for the worst when a gentleman in charge of managing our time to record became verbally abusive. For an entire week while at the studio (The studio was on a property that belonged to a manager of a well known artist) we woke up and went to sleep to him verbally abusing us, other artists and an engineer on site, even going so far as to threaten our lives. On the 7th day our brother and I decided we had enough and walked away from it all. This was personally crushing because for years it was a dream for my talent to be recognized and showcased to the world. Imagine waiting 14 years for an opportunity, it’s in your grasp and then ripped right out of your hands all because you stood up for yourself and other artists. I had to pivot hard. I took the time to heal from the experience and continue recording myself. In 2017 I graduated from a sound engineering school in Arizona. This came in handy because the experience had me in solitude and I had to engineer my own records the best way that I could. Still to this day I have been mixing/mastering my own records and putting them out to the world. I started my own entertainment company with the intention of truly helping other artists who have been purposely overlooked. Music should be fun, explosive, creative. Yes there are the twists and turns, however, it shouldn’t drain you and turn you away from your passion. I continued recording and stayed resilient. Even though the dream of signing to a major label didn’t happen I’m grateful because I’ve learned so much. I am 100% independent, own my own company, own my masters, I’m free to record when I want and release records when I desire to. What good comes from being signed to a major label when your passion is gone, you don’t own your music and you’re not truly free to create as you desire to. I truly believe everything happens for a reason and I’m grateful that my passion for music and the arts is still alive. That’s what truly matters.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative is being at a stop light jamming your own music and you look over and a girl has her window down and asks “Is that you rapping, that’s your music?” and your asked for your artist information. Just knowing your music is impacting others is everything. That feeling is incredible!
