We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Wendy Labat a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Wendy, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
When the government required that everyone have health insurance, I expanded my business to include insurance and financial services. I purchased the same products I sold to my clients. In 2017, I was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer. I chose a very aggressive form of treatment to conquer the disease. The treatment required chemotherapy every three weeks for a year, five surgeries, multiple CAT scans, MRIs, mammograms, regular lab tests, prescriptions, and other apparatus to overcome the disease. My medical bills amounted to almost $1.5 million. Can you imagine having to deal with that kind of medical expense as well as your personal and business expenses while battling breast cancer?
Thank God I practiced what I preached. My health insurance paid all of my medical bills. Additionally, the supplemental coverages I purchased (as part of my marketing strategy) provided me with multiple six-figure, tax-free financial shots in the arm that allowed me to focus on my recovery without worrying about money.
I thought that I found the financial cure for breast cancer, hence “The Financial Cures LLC” was established. I hired a branding expert to help me with my title. He dubbed me “The Financial Healer” and the rest is history.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In February I was trying to get cleared to have eye surgery on my left retina. After having an echocardiogram, my cardiologist required that I have an angiogram before he could clear me. The results of the angiogram revealed the need for further tests before a decision could be made about my clearance. After getting CAT scans and MRIs with and without contrast, it was discovered that I needed to have open heart surgery to replace my aortic valve before I could be cleared for eye surgery.
I thought, okay let’s do what needs to be done. I assumed that I could undergo the less invasive procedure to replace the valve, but the results indicated that the less invasive method was not an option for me because of the anatomy of my heart. My condition required the “slice your chest and crack your ribs” method.
In the meantime, I was scheduled to speak in New Orleans, and my best-selling book was being featured on the Jumbotron on Times Square in New Your. I was trying to figure out how I could meet my obligations and still have surgery to replace my heart valve. The recovery time was extensive and mandated no travel, lifting, or driving for at least three months followed by cardio rehabilitation.
My cardiothoracic surgeon suggested that I fulfill my obligations and then have the surgery so that I could recover in peace. That’s what I did. Even though I wasn’t involved in any in-person activities, my PR person established a strong presence in print and virtually. My recovery is going quite well. I’m traveling, driving, and back to doing in-person events and activities.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Integrity, honesty, transparency, longevity, and being a person of my word have helped me build my reputation within my market. I built my businesses through referrals. I started my entrepreneurial journey four decades ago when there was no internet or social media. The only thing you could do with a cell phone back then was make an expensive phone call. My word and reputation were and still are my most valuable assets. They are worth more than money.
When you are an expert in your market and your name comes up as the “go-to” person, it’s usually because you’re highly regarded and people are willing to recommend you to others.
