Dr. Venus , appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The name of my business is Bible Business, LLC. The Tagline is: Prosper God’s Way. Impact the World. The idea for this business didn’t come to me as much as it was revealed by God during a healing process that had me want to take my own life.
Let me back up a bit and explain. In 2018, I brought in $1.3 million in my previous business, Defy Impossible, Inc. That was the 5th consecutive year I exceeded the million-dollar mark in my business. I toured nationally, had two best-selling books, and produced live transformational business experiences for purpose-driven Black Women entrepreneurs.
Late in 2019, COVID emerged. By early March 2020, the pandemic required people not to gather. Without my book tours, in-person VIP Days, and live transformational business events, my business tanked.
On December 24, 2020, my brother transitioned in the span of 10 days due to COVID. WE were not permitted to go into the hospital to be with him or gather for a funeral.
Between 2020 and 2022, I made several attempts to pivot my business model. I tried online, but it wasn’t nearly as lucrative as in-person events. In fear and desperation, I took out an SBA loan to continue to pay my team, most of whom were moms. Defy Impossible, Inc. was a cash-based business. It had zero debt and no loans. But I was afraid. I could not bring in money the way I knew how to, and I didn’t want my pride about being “debt-free” to hurt the families God had entrusted me with. I was doing what I thought was best, but it was all survival.
In Aug 2022, I was sexually violated and emotionally betrayed by a man I loved.
Here’s the truth: I grew up as an unprotected child from 6-16. My body had been violated without my consent since childhood by both men and women. The damage of the 2022 incident wasn’t the physical violation; it was the emotional betrayal of knowing my background and tapping into that to make me compliant, even after I verbally stated No, I don’t want this.
After the incident, the violator did his best to convince me that it was my idea and that he loved me. This tactic was very familiar from my background, which he knew. I asked him to leave, and he did. He told me he loved me and would call me later. A trauma term is dissociation. It simply means your body is present, but you are no longer there. I know this because it’s what I did when grown people would take liberties with me.
As I drove my car to pick up my Psychiatric Service Animal, Happy, from doggie day care, I replayed the incident in my mind over and over again. The violator kept calling and leaving messages asking me what was wrong; our lovemaking was a gift from God. I realized that the violator would never stop until I agreed with him. I also know he wanted me to marry him. I had been groomed by pedophiles since I was six. Given my learned behavior of compliance, I would eventually succumb. Once I succumbed, it would only be a matter of time before I took my life.
That’s when I prayed.
I prayed the same prayer I prayed when my momma put me out of her house and I was living on the streets of Baltimore.
The prayer had only four words: “God, please help me.” And He did. He sent people to help me file the police report. Nanna, the high school teacher God used to get me off the streets and into an empowered life, flew to court for the restraining order trial. A friend of mine from Stanford handled all the legal work to protect my assets from the violator.
During this stage, I talked with God.
I told God I will not make it without Him. I consciously chose to let go of all of my identities, all my success, degrees, accomplishments–ALL of it–and chose to give my life.
He heard me.
God took me up in His arms.
He called me His own.
He held my hand as I relocated to get away from the stalking and harassment of the violator.
God dismantled every aspect of my life, leaving me to see only Him.
And I wrote.
What came out of my pen wasn’t the hurt, but pleas for help to get out of bed.
To comb my hair.
To bathe.
To stop fearing a surprise attack.
Cries for help fee safe.
I need God to give me the will to live.
It took over 2 years to become functional again. Actually closer to three.
The writing progressed from plaintive prayers to devotionals for Christian Black Women entrepreneurs. Then the writing became programs, teachings, flash cards, and affirmations, all centered on women of the Bible who did business.
That’s how Bible Business, LLC and Bible Business Publishing were born.
I went from being a self-made millionaire to a child of God who stewards God Made millions.
Now I teach faith-based women entrepreneurs, executives, and experts how to prosper God’s way–instead of the world’s way– and impact that world by positioning their anointing as a formidable asset in the marketplace.
