We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Uzoma F. Obidike recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Uzoma, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
My approach to career transition coaching goes beyond the traditional methods of resume polishing and online job applications. I prioritize professional networking as the foundation of making a career transition, emphasizing ongoing relationship-building and personal branding. Rather than focusing solely on reactive job searches, I advocate for proactive career management.
In guiding my clients, primarily mid-career women, I encourage them to cultivate meaningful connections and expand their networks continuously. This proactive approach opens doors to new opportunities and ensures ongoing support and growth in their professional journeys. By tapping into new and existing networks, my clients access valuable information, resources, job leads, and contacts that align with their new career goals and life aspirations. Through this approach, I empower women to secure their next dream jobs and navigate fulfilling professional paths tailored to their evolving life seasons.
Awesome! so before we get into the rest of our questions, could you briefly tell us how and why you became a coach?
I began to recognize my gift for developing women leaders when my coworkers and peers asked me how I quickly moved up in my career and had so many rewarding career experiences. While I attribute all of them to my merit, having an activated network opened doors and brought opportunities my way.
I became a career transition coach after working with a business coach who helped me uncover my gift of developing women. My top five CliftonStrengths—Futuristic, Empathy, Maximizer, Developer, and Includer—reveal my natural talents as a coach and strategist. I am most proud of my ability to connect with women from various backgrounds, industries, and levels in a way that inspires them and helps them access their career dreams one conversation at a time.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I learned how to build my personal and business brands with the guidance of experienced online business and strategists. So, from the very start of my business, I crafted a brand identity that authentically embodies my mission in a way that resonates with mid-career women seeking to transition careers. Over the years, I continued to build my reputation by sharing my mission with everyone I met through casual or formal conversations. In addition, I invest time in creating and sharing valuable career-related content on LinkedIn and via my email newsletter. Engaging with my audience through virtual events, workshops, presentations, and guest appearances on podcasts amplified my visibility and credibility. Ultimately, I attribute much of my success to helping women at the mid-career level feel seen and understood, showing up consistently, and being true to myself.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One crucial lesson I had to unlearn on my entrepreneurial journey was the belief in a “magic bullet” for business growth. Initially, I was drawn to the allure of following the latest trends in marketing and selling, assuming they held the key to success. However, over time, I realized that while trends may come and go, the foundational principles of business marketing and selling remain constant. Despite my love for learning and investing in various coaching programs and courses, I came to understand that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, I gained a comprehensive understanding of diverse approaches, which equipped me with the wisdom to discern what works best for my ideal clients and aligns with my preferred approach. Entrepreneurship is an ongoing journey of growth and iteration which makes the process enjoyable for me!
