Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Torian K. Salary. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dr. Torian K., thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Starting is always the hardest part. It’s hard because it requires you to begin something that you haven’t done before. It’s hard because it comes with risks, questions, concerns, and reservations. Our comfort zone is comfortable because that is what feels good to us. Starting something new means you have to sometimes step out of that comfort zone. When I made the decision to start writing a book, taking life coaching classes, and studying to become a Minister, it was hard. It was scary. However, I knew the outcome could change people’s lives for the better. I knew the world needed to hear my story, struggle, and my successes. Therefore, when it became hard to start, I kept focusing on the end result. Certainly, you’ve heard of the phrase, “begin with the end in mind.” That’s exactly what I did.
I began writing my book and taking life coaching classes at the same time. My idea was to change the world through my writing and coaching. I made a commitment to dedicate an hour per day to this project. I searched the internet for book covers that I like and life coaching websites that looked good to me. All of this was in an effort to keep me motivated when I felt like quitting. I made a goal to finish my book and the life coaching classes within a year.
Finally, I surrounded myself with people that would hold me accountable. These people included my wife and my children. I told them what I was doing and told them to check in on me from time to time to ensure I stay the course and hit my goal.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the Minister of the Hillcrest Church of Christ in Decatur, GA. Additionally, I am a certified Life Coach and an author. I was blessed to release my debut book in January of this year.
I am proud of all these accomplishments because I have the ability to change the lives of others in a positive way simply by using my words. Whether I am preaching on Sunday, coaching throughout the week, or speaking about my book, I offer motivation and inspiration to each person I’m blessed to meet.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My book, called ‘Weathering Your Wilderness’, is a self-help book consisting of sermons, stories, and strategies that readers can relate to. It’s so relatable because it outlines my life and how I went through adversity and depression, but stayed the course and fought back. The book is an example of my resilience and how readers can learn the strategies to bounce back from the pits of life they fall into.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I’ve had to pivot a few times in my life. Unfortunately, some of those moments were out of my control. As I mention in my book, I lost my job twice and it happened back-to-back. That could not have come at a worse time, as I was married with two children and one on the way. It was my responsibility to provide for a family and I had an overdrawn account constantly. My mentality was that the world was out to get me, I fell into a depression, and it seemed I was unhirable, although I had two degrees and was working on a Ph.D. at the time. I had to shift my mind to thinking of upbeat, happy moments to combat my depression. I had to pivot how I looked at the world. Once I made that change, things in my life began to get better. As a result, the lesson I share with audiences today is that you should always think differently and never allow the world or circumstances to shape your thoughts.
