We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Tara Suwinyattichaiporn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dr. Tara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
The defining moment in my career was when I decided to start my own relationship coaching practice and become a content creator. Prior to starting my own business, I was a full-time professor (and I still am!) at Cal State Fullerton. I love teaching students but my students have always told me that I should start coaching people and making content on social media because of my knowledge and unapologetic and personable communication style. I wasn’t sure if starting my business was the right move but I pushed myself to do it. After I published my website and started promoting it, I immediately had a few clients booking me so that was a huge moment for me that I can really do this. On top of that, a few months after posting my content consistently I started to see significant growth on my TikTok, which means more coaching clients as well. 1 year later my sex ed and comedy TikTok @Luvbites.co grew to 2 million followers. It gave me immense affirmations that I’m doing something right here and people are benefitting from it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I had been a college professor for many years before I started my own sex and relationship coaching business. I love teaching students but at the same time, I also wanted to help more people without being confined to the college classroom. That’s why I started my sex and relationship coaching business and social media, Luvbites.
Luvbites has 3 aspects:
1. Personalize coaching with me where we discover your sex and relationship goals and make plans on how you can get there and maintain the relationship you desire.
2. Luvbites by Dr. Tara Podcast offers an in-depth and entertaining discussion on different sex topics (for example, interviews with sex surrogates, therapists, sex researchers, erotic film actors, etc.)
3. Luvbites social media (TikTok, IG, and YouTube) provides short-form advice and interesting sex and dating facts.
What sets me apart from others is my education, relatability, and diverse personal experiences. I have a Ph.D. in human communication and most people’s sex and relationship issues are actually communication issues. I have lived around the world. I have been through a divorce. As an Asian woman who grew up in a sexually repressed culture, I overcame my sexual shame and guilt and became a sexually powerful woman. As an immigrant, I understand people who have moved around and had to adjust their behaviors to fit into a new culture. I have a diverse and unique perspective on healthy sexual relationships and I think people like that it’s non-traditional.
I’m proud of how many people I’ve helped through all 3 aspects of Luvbites. I’ve received many heartwarming emails that affirm me I am on the right path. I’m only in my mid-30s so this journey is only the beginning and I’m excited to see where this will go. Sex positivity is healthy and I’m here to normalize it!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One difficult thing as a sex ed content creator is that social media companies often remove your posts and they don’t offer you creator funds like other content creators get (my IG reel bonus has been removed and TikTok creator fund has been suspended since last year).
Sex education content is often removed from social media due to “community guidelines violations” even though they’re great education with the purpose of normalizing sex positivity.
It can feel very discouraging and hopeless when a lot of your content that you spent so much time creating are being removed or that you don’t get compensated like other creators but I power through because I believe in the message and I know that the world needs more sex-positive people. A practice that helps build my resilience is journaling. I journal positive things about myself and my business.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
100% I would choose the same profession. This is my calling. My destiny!
