We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. SUDIKSHYA BASKOTA. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. SUDIKSHYA below.
Hi Dr. SUDIKSHYA, thanks for joining us today. We’re complete cheeseballs and so we love asking folks to share the most heartwarming moment from their career – do you have a touching moment you can share with us?
This story is the one when I graduated with a Doctorate degree and on my graduation day my parents traveled all the way from Nepal to see me walk. When I walked in front of my mother during the graduation, she had tears in her eyes. My mother did not have the privilege of getting any education so for her to see her daughter get a doctorate her lifetime and for me to see her during graduation with tears of joy is something I can never forget. On the hard days, I remind myself of this story and keep moving forward.
Dr. SUDIKSHYA, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi Everyone,
I am Dr. Sudikshya Baskota a licensed Naturopathic Physician and Primary care Physician in the state of WA. I believe in patient-centric whole-person health care and the therapeutic relationship between patient and doctor as a fundamental basis to make shared decisions for your health.
I graduated with a doctorate from Bastyr University and completed a teaching residency in family medicine at the teaching clinic of Bastyr University. I have extensive experience in working with various health conditions as well as working with diverse age groups, ethnicity, gender, and trauma history. In a clinical setting, I am curious about how culture and social determinants of health affect people’s well-being and individualized treatment plans based on those unique needs.
I currently co-own and practice at lotus integrative healthcare alongside other wonderful Doctors( Dr. Rochelle, Dr. Sherya, and Dr. Sally). We also have a meditation instructor, Utsav, and Nutritionist, Ashlyn who provide their services. We are a diverse team that can provide holistic health care for people of all backgrounds.
My clinical interest includes menstrual issues, pelvic floor disorders, pre-diabetes, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, digestive disorders, IBS, anxiety, depression, burnout, stress management, thyroid disorder, sleep issues, and preventative medicine. I can provide care in three different languages i.e. English, Nepali, and Hindi.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes, this is my story right now in 2023.
To give you a little background, I have been working as an employee and a faculty for Bastyr after finishing my residency for many different practices. If you look at the holistic health field in general, we don’t see a lot of diversity even though some of these ideas and concepts stem from diverse cultures around the world. IMa For example: when people think of healthy eating in mainstream media, people think of salads, and a lot of the patient population I serve do not have salad as their cultural food. When you are making lifestyle recommendations, you see how important culture can be. In order to serve people of all backgrounds, finally, in 2022, Utsav, my husband, Dr. Rochelle, Ashlyn, and I gathered as a team and together we decided to build a place where patients felt safe to discuss their health concerns without hesitation, without feeling that they have to explain their culture to their doctor. As a team, we value each other’s skills as well as uniqueness and most importantly we collaborate to bring the best outcome for our patients. This has been a difficult journey for all of us to start and run our own clinic but it has also been extremely rewarding on many levels.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
This is a hard question for me. Yes and no.
I love what I do on a daily basis as a doctor. I always wanted to be a doctor since I was a kid. The satisfaction of educating people on their health is extremely rewarding. Having that said, it also comes with tremendous pressure on a daily basis as my words impact people’s lives, and navigating the medical/ insurance system is not fun. So on the days, I feel this pressure, I wish I would be doing something simple. However, I probably would have chosen to be a doctor all over again, I may have focused on different specialties but still would in this field for sure.
