We recently connected with Dr. Shree Cooper-Franks and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Shree , thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents have made an significant imprint on my life. My mother is the strongest person I know. She raised all 3 of her biological kids, an adopted sister and a host of cousins that were raised with me in our home. She has the biggest heart and has always been a strong pillar of resilience. She is courageous, god-fearing, motivated, humorous and stern. All of those characteristics has made me into the Phoenix that I am today. Consequently, my mother reared me and my siblings by herself. My dad was incarcerated for most of my life but through the time he was not in prison and through letters he encouraged and believed that I would do great things.
My mother raised us in church which gave me the foundation to believe in Christ. I remember the days we would attend church everyday and I was always feeling like we shouldn’t be there all day-LOL? However, as I encountered days where I encountered uncertainties as to what direction I would make or trying to make a certain decision I had a strong faith foundation to fall back on based on my faith. As a teenage mother, I had to rely on my faith to guide me in making the best decisions not only for me but for me and my daughter.
My dad was not physically present for most of my upbringing, but he taught me how to see things clearly. He taught me how to be emotionally strong. One of his many but favorite things he would always tell me was to be ‘wise as a serpent but humble as a dove”. So, be intelligent but humble. Those words are imprinted on me. I reflect often on that. I also learned forgiveness from my father. I wanted to hold a grudge for him not being present but I realize the burden of holding onto something that I can not change was useless. But forgiveness is freeing. So, I chose the later and it has made my interactions with him and others so much better.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

My business partner is my husband. We met through very close friends. He expressed interest in providing options to families in lieu of a nursing home or having them live by themselves. We discussed and knew that with my strong sense of compassion and courage we could conquer anything.
