We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Sheniqua Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Sheniqua, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I have been in the health care profession for over 20 years. I started as a teenager, earning my certification as a Nursing Assistant and continued into adulthood as a professional Registered Nurse. I have earned stellar accolades as a nurse, having trained over 900 health coaches and 2500 of today’s Registered Nurses. I love helping, healing, and teaching people in all areas of health care whether in the hospitals, home care, academia, or corporate; however, my most defining moment in my career came when I realized there was more to me than what I was trained to do. My greatest moment came when I connected with my calling in life and began to fully walk in my divine purpose.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Dr. Sheniqua Johnson, affectionately known as Sheniqua Inspires. My life’s mission is to spread the encouragement, inspiration, and motivation that I found myself once in need of, to others who find themselves lacking in those areas. A Registered Nurse by profession who holds the high esteemed of a honorary doctorate in philosophy, I am dedicated to living & learning as I journey through life. I am the CEO & owner of A Better U, LLC, where I help busy multitasking professionals reprioritize wellbeing in their lives. Although it may sound like a simple task, many of us neglect ourselves in order to serve others. My motto is “I teach you how to continue to serve the world 100% without subtracting anything from yourself.” This goes beyond an occasional self-care day and branches into a lifestyle that is easy to maintain, even in a world of busyness. As a Certified Business Coach, I also help aspiring entrepreneurs get started on their entrepreneurial journey; avoiding the pitfalls that I fell into and had to spend thousands of dollars and many years of time & energy to get out of. Through my mentorship program, I save you time and money by offering individualized support along with practical strategies specific to your unique business that will get you leaping light years ahead in your business. I am proud of the difference I am making in the lives of my clients. I am proud of the strides my clients have taken to make their dreams a reality. I am honored that with my support, strategies, and accountability, new businesses are not only being birthed but excelling in their industries. I am proud that through my books and training programs, busy professionals are maintaining healthier lifestyles.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn is that we are meant to be the lone soldier. Just because we can do it alone, it doesn’t mean that we should. I had to re-learn how to trust my judgement and my intuition when it comes to selecting who is worthy of my company. My discernment had to sharpen and even if someone slips by, I know it was to teach me a valuable lesson for the next moment & time. I had to unlearn that thought process of quantity is better than quality. When I was younger, it mattered the number of people in my corner. Thank goodness I am not recruiting for a baseball team and I learned that it is quality that matters the most. This new mindset has afforded me the opportunity to sit with the right people that help me to excel in every aspect of my life. This includes selecting my coaches, friends, and clients.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
My degrees and titles don’t always match what it is that I do. Being acknowledged as Dr. Johnson carries some weight in my wellness business but in the media world it does not. Thankfully, it’s not the title that I depend on, it’s the impact that I make. It has become less about the knowledge that I have obtained and more about the chances that I take. In spite of the occasional bout of Imposter’s Syndrome that always tries to surface, I stick to my strategy which says get in the room and make your presence known. Here’s what I learned, your presence isn’t always made when you are standing on the stage but it can also be felt by the impact you create while sitting in the chairs. My perseverance to get in rooms that I know will benefit me despite being scared that I feel like I don’t belong. My resilience to show up and show my brilliance in every single arena I enter has proven to be just as beneficial to my success as all of my degrees and accolades.
