Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr Shawon Gullette ND, I.A.T. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dr Shawon , thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
About 6 years ago, I encountered a significant moment in my career as a clinical trichologist that altered my business perspective. I was working with a patient who had struggled with severe hair loss and had consulted numerous medical professionals in and out of Ohio without finding a solution. Despite being advised by multiple Dermatologists that her hair follicles were dead and that she should simply wear a wig, I employed my holistic 5-step approach to assess her overall health and identify the underlying reasons for her hair loss. Through this method, I was able to successfully have hair regrowth in areas where she had not seen growth in years. This success not only restored her hair, but also revitalized her confidence. Subsequently, Dermatologists began referring their patients to me for co-management of hair loss cases, a testament to the effectiveness of my approach. My dedication to research and ongoing learning has proven to be invaluable in positively impacting the lives of my patients.

Dr Shawon , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
“I am a clinical trichologist, specializing in the study of hair and scalp disorders and diseases. For those unfamiliar with trichology, it involves a deep understanding of the reasons behind hair loss and other issues related to hair and scalp health. I decided to pursue trichology after witnessing women struggling with hair loss during my time as a hair stylist. I wanted to delve deeper into the root causes of these issues and gain a comprehensive knowledge of how to address them. My journey led me to the International Association of Trichologists, where I underwent rigorous training to become a certified clinical trichologist.
After five years of intensive study and clinical practice in Dallas, Texas, I decided to further my education by becoming a natural health practitioner and eventually a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine. This additional training has provided me with a holistic understanding of the body’s systems and how they contribute to hair loss, allowing me to approach trichology from a more comprehensive and Eastern Medicine perspective.”
One of my greatest sources of pride is the ability to assist patients in identifying the underlying cause of their hair loss, ultimately aiding in their overall health and well-being. I find great satisfaction in knowing that by addressing the root cause of this issue, I am approaching their health holistically. It is rewarding to understand that the condition of one’s hair can serve as an indicator of their internal health.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Understanding the complexities of hair loss is crucial when working with individuals affected by Alopecia. Factors such as hormones, diet, digestion, absorption, medications, overall health, body systems, and epigenetics must all be considered. Breaking down these factors in relation to hair loss has been instrumental in achieving high success rates in promoting hair regrowth and stabilizing hair loss.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could do it all over again, I would have certainly embarked on this career path at a younger age. The joy and fulfillment I derive from assisting women on their hair loss journey is unparalleled!
