We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Shawna Eischens. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Shawna below.
Dr. Shawna, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Growing up in Minnesota, I was passionate about the body and had early interests in nutrition, kinesiology, and health, yet had not yet heard of the term naturopathy or naturopathic medicine. After receiving no answers from conventional medicine for some health concerns, and being a part of my Mom’s cancer journey, I knew that I wanted to help people, yet through a different path than allopathic medicine.
When I first heard, then learned more about the term naturopathic physician, a light bulb went on as though this is what I had been seeking all along, without even knowing there was such a career.
I have always been inquisitive and wanted to know the ‘why’ behind things, including health concerns. The body is brilliantly designed to heal itself, so I wanted to figure out the causes behind symptoms and disease. This mindset aligns perfectly with naturopathic philosophy as it’s important to resolve underlying causes to help people heal.
For the first many years of life, I was really good at achieving, yet also excelled at numbing and distracting. I succeeded at stuffing my emotions, including grief from my Mom’s passing 10 years prior, until my body reached its limit and the emotional flood gates opened. This breakdown happened on my birthday, during my third year of naturopathic medical school. I was forced to address the underlying causes, which included many layers of suppressed emotion, and self-limiting beliefs.
I am forever thankful for homeopathy and NET/Neuro Emotional Technique which saved and changed my life. I have even more empathy and compassion for anyone struggling with grief, addiction, the desire for perfectionism, or feelings of unworthiness as I have first hand experience with them all.
My own journey has played a role in how I currently practice as I know how important it is to address stored emotion/stress/trauma before we are forced to deal with it like I was. I truly believe we are ALL worthy and deserving of love, and healing. I named my practice Hope and Healing Naturopathic as so many patients come to me feeling hopeless after seeing various practitioners, and we are able to offer them hope that they can and will heal. This healing comes from within, not from labs, medications or supplements. I educate patients on their ideal genetic diet, love on their detox pathways to reduce toxicity, resolve stored stress and trauma from subconscious layers, and allow their body to show off with increased energy, more balanced emotions, and better sleep, skin, and overall health!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I thrive on truth and integrity, so I’m going to be brutally honest and authentic regardless of whether I’m with a friend, patient, or colleague. I know the power of our mind and body to heal and I’m incredibly passionate about how naturopathic medicine was designed to give the body what it needs to heal by addressing underlying causes and resolving blocks to healing.
I will never “sell out” to what is “sexy” or popular, rather, I am consistent in my philosophy and approach, because it works and has withstood the test of time.
My goal is to help the body show off and allow people to heal themselves, with my support and guidance. The philosophy and modalities that I offer are different than any other ND, and combines the best of modern science with ancient wisdom, without relying on a bunch of supplements. Through my consistency and unwavering passion for naturopathic medicine and the power of our incredibly designed body to heal itself, I think my reputation has spoken for itself through my words, actions, and educational material that I offer.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Yes, so many!
Considering I had no business sense or background, I have jumped in with both feet to learn as much as I can about myself, business, and leadership.
I believe that the more self aware and balanced we are, the more resilient and capable we are of leading others and taking life’s stressors in stride. My work with patients focuses a lot on shifting underlying subconscious blocks to healing to reduce stress, and I practice what I preach by continually working on my own self-limiting beliefs or areas of growth.
Some classic books that have been powerful for me regarding mindset were “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind.” by Dr. Joseph Murphy and “Think And Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.
Simon Sinek’s books “Start With Why”, “Leaders Eat Last”, and “Find Your Why” were all insightful to learn more about leadership.
Our thoughts impact every aspect of life including business, therefore, it’s important to focus on daily, consistent habits versus one huge single action. I do my best to listen to something nearly every day to water the seeds for growth. I have enjoyed Sean Croxton’s “Quote of the Day” snippets, Dr. Bruce Lipton’s wisdom, Alex Hormozi’s truth bombs, or Mel Robbins pearls to help keep me maintain a growth mindset.
