Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Shavon Leach. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dr. Shavon , thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Growing up I kept everything in. I did not reach out to anyone for help because I did not feel comfortable speaking up. So, I wrote everything down. I wrote my thoughts, feelings, desires, fears, etc. I wrote anything that came to mind. Writing gave me a voice and helped me deal with everyday life. I was able to deal with my trauma (and continue to overcome it every day). Writing helped me to be brave and begin to step into my potential. I knew that if journal writing helped me then it could help someone else. Writing is healing because it forces you to see yourself and really dig into who you are. Since everyone can benefit from journal writing I knew that Forever Open Journal & Notebook Collection was the way I could make God’s intended impact. Through journal writing, I knew that I could give women a brave space to open up, heal, develop goals, and build their relationships with God so that they can be the best versions of themselves. What gets me excited about Forever Open Journal & Notebook Collection is knowing that I am going to help women step into their greatest potential.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a mother, wife, entrepreneur, leadership development coach, a creative, and social justice activist. I am the author of Love Chance Freedom and an international best-selling author in the books Unleash Her and Mom Magic. With a passion for helping the community, I use my expertise to help individuals become self-aware leaders. I use my creativity to help increase community engagement and educate the community on laws and policies that impact their lives. I wholeheartedly believe in people and their power to build community strength. I created Forever Open Journal & Notebook Collection LLC to give women a brave space to reveal their inner truths, connect with themselves, and build the inner confidence needed to become the best version of themselves.
I got into the Journal & Notebook Industry because I knew that there were women who needed a way to have their voices heard, open up, build their relationship with God. So, I did research and started my business. I offer themed journals (goal journals, devotion journals, prayer journals, and positive affirmation journals), and cute notebooks. In 2023, I am going to offer leadership development coach for christian women in leadership. Through Forever Open, women can heal, create and carry out plans, unstand their God given identity and build their relationship with God.
I believe offering journals that can help women step into their greatest potential sets my business apart from others. The questions that women will answer in these journals will help them deeply reflect on themselves and their growth.
Honestly, I am proud to be able to help women in any way I can.
I believe and tell people all the time that we have everything we need to grow or make difference we just have to access it. Journal writing helps us get there. There is so much that God can reveal to us through our writing.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I used my paycheck to fund my business. When I started my business, I did not know anything about start-up funds and business grants. So, I used my paycheck. I made sure I budgeted in my business when I budgeted for my family every month. And when I had enough money to send my journals to print, I did.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I do a lot of research, attend workshops, and work with different coaches to ensure I am learning whatever I need to know to be an effective kingdom entrepreneur. I read about increasing sales, taxes, understanding social media, etc. One of the most important things that I learned was not to get caught up in trying to do everything and be everywhere. Everything that I do needs to relate to my business and the impact God wants me to make. In the beginning, it was easy for me to get caught up in wanting to add different components to my business to make it “better”. That honestly only distracted me. One of the best decisions I have made is deciding to work with a coach.
