Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Shae Jones-Alexander. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dr. Shae, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents led our home by example. They talked the talk and walked the walk in front of my siblings and me. My parents are my biggest cheerleaders and have always supported me in all I do. Knowing that I have the unwavering and relentless support of my parents always allowed me to be fearless in my endeavors.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Dr. Shae has over 15 years of experience assisting, encouraging, and coaching clients toward success as an educator, and counselor.
Throughout my career in the helping profession I have learned how to be flexible and adapt to new environments while maintaining stability and continuing to move forward — all of which have helped shape me as an individual, a therapist, an educator, and a life coach.
Like many, I have experienced some very trying times, lots of loss of loved ones, personal changes, and many gains personally and professionally, so I am trained both formally and informally in helping my clients sustain healthy mindsets as they achieve their next levels of success! Growth is truly an empowering process and I am honored to be able to weave my passion into my purpose while helping you reach YOUR next level of success.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
As a clinician of color, there are many obstacles that must be overcome to grow your business and your brand. When COVID hit, like many other businesses we had to evaluate our standards of practice and almost immediately move towards telemental health services almost overnight. This change has ultimately caused a growth in clientele as I am able to serve clients across state lines through video counseling services.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was not to work my life away and work myself to death. As a therapist, sometimes we spend so much time and energy supporting our clients that we forget to take time to fill our cups with love and support. You cannot pour from an empty cup and we must always make sure we take care of ourselves and those who love and support us. Finding that balance is something that I am constantly working on. Understanding that I am not a superwoman and knowing when and how to take a break is essential professionally and personally and is something that I am unlearning.
