We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Scott Hastings a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dr. Scott thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I have always been passionate about my desire to lower the cost of healthcare for people. As a young doctor just out of residency living the dream as a small-town do-it-all country doctor in Show Low, Arizona, People talk about “helping people afford their healthcare”, but those words seemed so hollow to me. I was young, the my future was bright. I was going to single-handedly take on the medical establishment (much bigger than I thought) using my physician-humanitarian from small-town America ego (much smaller than I thought). So the challenge for me was to set out and change the world. I started 3 companies that sought to leverage medical costs of the average consumer against large insurance companies by developing an online way to purchase labs, imaging, and medications called BidOnHealth.com. A website where you could “bid” on the price of your xray, lab test, or medication. It seemed like a great idea and we got a lot of attention, but ultimately, it didn’t have staying power and we closed it down. Learning how to take risks in that venture did help me open 7 Health, a very successful direct primary care organization based in Frisco, Texas.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Dr. Hastings is passionate about affordable, research-based healthcare. He practices integrative medicine, which combines the best of traditional western medicine and well-researched alternative methods. He specializes in internal medicine, allergy treatment, prolotherapy, and osteopathic manipulation (similar to chiropractic treatments).
An entrepreneur at heart, Dr. Hastings pioneered one of the first Direct Primary Care (DPC) practices in the U.S. in 2008: Doctor’s Health Solution. He is now the founder of 7Health, which is a thriving DPC practice right here in Frisco Texas.
7Health is an amazing alternative to individuals & their families that cant afford the high cost of commercial health insurance. It is hard enough to raise families with the current economy much less worry about you & your families health!
Have you ever heard of direct primary care? It is basically a subscription based, monthly plan. You pay a low monthly fee directly to our providers without having to hassle with a middle man insurance company. By cutting out the insurance middle-man, our healthcare providers are available to treat patients more quickly with no hassles, referrals, or extra fees. You do not have to worry about having a pre existing ailments or pre-existing conditions.
Our membership fees are very affordable and Dr. Hastings likes to make sure it stays affordable for his patients to get the care they deserve. Our fee start at $67 for a single person and $167 for families. Office visits are only $7!
Dr. Hastings is a very passionate family man & is more concerned about the quality of care that his patients receive rather than the amount of money he makes. This shows in his bedside manor, the time spent with his patients, & passion he puts into the 7Health program.
Dr. Hastings’ greatest passion is spending time with his wife and family. He enjoys composing and playing his own classical piano music, traveling, and doing humanitarian work with his family.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Pivoting requires patience, a lot of it. A large pivot came for me when I decided to pack up my family from our small rural town in the White Mountains of Arizona for Dallas, Texas. Talk about a pivot! We completely uprooted everything to make this move, and with no promise of employment. This meant largely reducing and eventually shutting down our medical office in Arizona.
It was extremely difficult in the process. The sheer heavy lifting of not only getting a family re-established but also starting and trying to market a new medical practice was almost too much to handle. Luckily, we had time on our side and continued to stick it out.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Of course! Nothing is more fulfilling to me than to be able to have a depth and breadth of knowledge and skill that makes a well-seasoned physician. I feel very lucky to be able to do a wide array of procedures every day instead of being relegated to just one or two things. I would get very bored very quickly and lose my sense of purpose and meaning.
