We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Sam Von Reiche recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Sam, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
When I graduated from grad school with a Psy.D, I figured it would be be fairly easy to get a job. Far from it! There were almost no jobs for non-licensed psychologists available (licensure was a few year away.)
In this case, tenacity won the day! I began going through the phone book (yes, that’s what we used back then), looking at mental health programs I could work in. I found one addiction treatment program willing to interview me…Of course, that was after I had made multiple follow-up calls to them. After one interview, they hired me for an administrative position that launched my career.
Several months into my successful position there, my boss joked that he had hired me just because I was such a pain in the ass.
He loved me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I became a psychologist because I was always a great listener, full of empathy for others. I always wanted to help people feel better about themselves. I was also always telling people things that they didn’t know–going back to telling the much older kids on the block about the facts of life. I also came from a very dysfunctional family and had struggled with anxiety and depression from a very young age. I was bullied for being Jewish.
When I took my first abnormal psychology course at Princeton, I was hooked!! And at the same time my boyfriend’s mom was already a famous radio psychologist doing some pretty out of the box stuff.
I am most proud of standing for wellness in the field that is illness-focused. I have been a proponent of holistic mental health for over 20 years and am now pitching a television show about this topic.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Doing consistently excellent work, getting amazing reviews, and having an online presence before therapists were using the internet.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I became a huge Tony Robbins fan and his book Awaken the Giant Within was a game-changer for me. This is not a psychology book, per see. But it shaped a lot of the motivational strategies that I use with clients.
