Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Regina Ransom . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dr. Regina , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
When I first started my practice, I had to determine how to take all of my knowledge and both my skill sets and create one practice. However, what I found was that my love for vegan skincare products and my love for alternative medicine did not quite go together into one brand. One of the biggest challenges in setting up my brand was trying to put all my passion and skillset into one brand. What I had to eventually do was create two separate brands around both of my passions. I would say, one thing I would have done differently would be to separate both brands from the beginning. My advice to any young professionals looking to start their own practice would be to start small and to really understand your target market.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My story of how I got into vegan skincare and alternative medicine truly go hand in hand. I grew up in a household with just my mother and my grandmother. My grandmother was the matriarch of the entire family. My grandmother did not believe in traditional medicine and she was totally against any type of use of pharmaceutical products. My grandmother grew her own fruits, vegetables, and herbs, and managed her own animals for food. We did not live on a farm in the traditional sense, but we had a lot of land where we grew everything ourselves. My grandmother made her own household items such as dish soap, hand soap, washing detergent, toothpaste, and pretty much everything else. I can remember from an early age helping her in the garden to harvest her fruits and vegetables. When I became sick as a child, my grandmother would give me some form of herbal treatment, but never traditional medicine. My grandmother would have neighbors come to her for all types of ailments and she would always prepare some herb or some type of medicine for them and fix them right up. I was always amazed by my grandmother, she was like a doctor without all the fancy degrees.
As a young adult, I harvested all of the knowledge I was raised with and I decided to make my own products as well for my husband and children. This is also where I decided to go to a natural health medical school to become a naturopathic doctor. In medical school, I learned how to help people using only natural holistic methods that help the body tap into its own natural healing process. My medical school experience was an amazing experience for me. Two years after completing medical school I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer. My doctor at that time wanted me to start chemotherapy right away. I refused to do chemotherapy and decided to formulate my own treatment plan. I spent six months treating myself through a formulation of all-natural herbs, and a semi-vegan no red meat diet. When I went in for my six-month checkup, my doctor was astonished that the cancer had just disappeared. I knew that it was not a miracle in the traditional sense, but I was able to holistically tap into my body’s natural healing process so that it could heal. Today, that was nine years ago and I have been cancer free ever since. I think what sets me apart from others is my experience and my knowledge runs very deep and has deep roots. I grew up in the 60s when things were simple, and I have perfected my knowledge from that time and the knowledge from our current time to create two separate brands that together create total transformations.
One of the biggest problems I solve for clients is obesity. I have built an entire health and wellness brand that specializes in helping women who suffer from excessive obesity get healthy the holistic way, and lose weight holistically. I typically work with clients who are 300 pounds and above. My vegan skincare brand specializes in creating all-natural vegan skincare products that solve everyday issues such as acne, eczema, dry skin, and aging.
I would have to say the thing that I am most proud of is how many people I have been able to help to date. I have been in business now for seven years and in that time I have helped over 2,000 clients and customers. I enjoy seeing my client’s transformations and lifestyle changes.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
We live in a time where there are so many different jobs available. I have worked at jobs where I was not happy and where I felt underappreciated. In my alternative health practice, I have a small team of professionals that work with me. One of the first things I do to build high morale is create a holistic environment that is soothing and enjoyable for my staff. My staff is also along some of the highest-paid professionals in their field. I pay a higher wage because I want my staff to know that I value their time and expertise. I also think it is important to provide team-building dates where my team gets to bring their families and loved ones into their world and learn more about me and my family. We are truly a family and I go above and beyond to make sure my staff is appreciated every day.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start?
When I started my business, I went in with the attitude that at least for the first year, there was not going to be any income. I had saved some money over the years to go towards opening my business, but I still knew that a small business load was going to be needed. I took $30,000 from my initial savings and obtained a small micro business loan for another $25,000. This investment was enough for me to get my business up and running comfortably. I paid rent for my space upfront for the first six months. I spent a tremendous amount of time getting my name out into the world and introducing myself to people. Funding a business is a very important step, and I think it is important to understand that any business will need financial support for the first year at the very least before it can start making an actual profit.
