We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Phillip Morgan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Phillip, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My parents realized that their life was not all the way together to raise my siblings and I. They made sure we were surrounded by loved ones who could support, love, guide, and show us structure. From age 3 until I graduated college in 2009, my grandparents Connie and Alfred Sr. were my literally guardians. My grandmother was the first African-American/Native American woman to work in the Manalapan, NJ school education system. My grandfather turned down the NFL and MLB to raise his family because he was already on that Colin Kaepernick move. My mother always called and visited when I was growing up but as I got older I found her and moved her to Baltimore with me. My father never missed a football game even if I played on Mars, he would always find a way. When he retired from teaching in NJ, I also moved him here to Baltimore with me. Both of my grandparents and parents have transitioned, Im am just keeping the dream alive.
Dr. Phillip, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Dr. Phillip Morgan who was born and raised on the Jersey Shore where I matriculated in athletics, community service, and academics. I am high energy and have a passion for life. I wrote a book on how to help African American Woman between the ages of 25-45 decrease their chances of obesity. I hated school growing up because I believe my Teachers couldn’t relate to my culture. When it was time to take my education seriously, I locked in, separating myself from others, and started my game plan to open a gym and wellness facility. We have been open since 2016 and we specialize in Weight Management, Injury Prevention, Clinical Movement Enhancement, and Sports Psychology. I am known for helping patients lose up to 30lbs in 6 weeks through fitness, nutrition, and motivational music. I want my followers to know that literally anything is possible. If you think less, you will remain in the same cycle.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During Covid business was slow as we all know, health and wellness facilities were closed and I barely had income. Me only having only 1099 employees I was not approved for the PPP loan. For over a year I was funding my operation and 11 (1099) contractors out of my savings. With that being said, the landlord did not care that we were not operating fully and wanted ALL of the rent money. We went back and forth for months and he finally agreed to stack 2020/2021 balance onto 2022. This doubled my rent, while heading into a recession. God just knows what he is doing and as long as I am on the mission to help others, it always works out. We are open 7 days a week and offer classes 5am-8pm for all fitness levels, athletes, seniors, and corporate offices.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My energy was too much for a 9-5 salary because Im going to work harder than 3 people. I realized as an entrepreneur there is literally no salary cap and that was a no brainer because I believe in Me.
