Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Pamela Gurley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, Dr. Pamela thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?

There are a lot of things I have done in my life that have led me to where I am, what I do, and the impact I want to make. Not all I chose, yet I am extremely grateful God chose me. When I resigned from federal employment, it was the scariest awakening of my life. Nothing wakes you up the way purpose does, and everything meant will suddenly fall into place. For me, it was my Brown Girl and Brown Boy children’s book series and Kid’s Red Carpet Book Tour. When it manifested, God gave me the vision and provision for them.

As I began writing and publishing my children’s books in 2021, I knew I wanted to connect to Black and Brown children’s social and emotional needs. I also started researching the literacy gaps in Black and Brown Children. Understanding how to connect those three things became my mission. I began to connect literacy to life and show children its power – not just in the books but also during my book signing. I chose not to have a traditional book signing. I wanted something that would give children an experience. So, I curated a small kid’s red carpet festival and added fun and educational activities. So not only can parents purchase my books and have them signed, the children were able to have fun. In year two (2022), I opened my tour to other children’s book authors. If children can see themselves in the books they read and meet the Black and Brown authors that write them, it can not only cultivate a love of reading; it can aid in their social and emotional development.

Dr. Pamela, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I wear many hats, but full-time I am the Founder/CEO of Clark and Hill Enterprise. As a Content Strategy Expert, I provide writing services to small and medium businesses – technical writing, content writing, media writing, and copywriting. Essentially, businesses can focus on running their businesses and leave the writing to my company. There are not many companies that provide business writing at the magnitude that my company does all under one roof. I also provide business and writing coaching, as well as publishing services.

As a Transformational Speaker and World-Renowned Author, I understand the power of words. (both verbal and written). As the CEO and Founder of IAMDRPGURLEY and Founder/President of the Brown Girl and Brown Boy Literacy Foundation, I am on a mission to empower, grow, and motivate others, as well as lead and challenge social norms.

What I am most proud of is being able to celebrate Clark and HillEnterprise’s 5th year in business on October 1, 2022. Being able to not only resign from my full-time job during the pandemic after three years in business, but I am also still standing two years later and celebrating a business milestone. Writing is a creative art form and an expressive one. To be able to have written for and about so many people, businesses, websites, and brands makes me feel honored that all of my clients put their trust in my company to be a part of their content branding strategy or business development.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

In business, I had to unlearn what I thought I knew about success. I realized that the key to success was not just working hard but ensuring I knew the value of the hard work I provided. When I launched my company, I worried if my prices were too high, I would not secure clients. Black businesses have always had a negative stigma on them when it came to value (especially if your name or business was not well-known). For two years, I realized the clients I was servicing did not yield the amount of revenue I wanted or deserved. Most wanted a discount on a rate that was already low. I honestly don’t think people realize the time and creative effort that goes into writing a social media caption, let alone website content, a business plan, or a blog. Writing is a craft that I consider a gift.

By year three, I changed my target market and began working with clients that understood the value of the business services I was providing. I believe in being fair to myself and fair to my clients. I don’t “cookie-cut” my content and ensure my turn-around is as expeditious as humanly possible.

Unlearning what I thought about success has allowed me to understand my value to my clients.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the opportunity to have your voice heard and be a voice for others. To be able to express yourself through your writing is a true gift, one that not everyone has. Everyone’s “voice” is unique and important, and to have the ability and power to create their branding around it to engage others is rewarding. When you’re a creative, you have the chance to connect with people on a deeper level. You can inspire change and bring joy into people’s lives.

Being a creative isn’t just about expressing yourself – it’s about connecting with others. When you’re a creative, you have the ability to see things from another perspective and to create something that resonates with people on a deeper level. Whether I am writing social media captions or books, my work can connect with people in a way that goes beyond the surface. It’s this connection that makes being a creative so special. And it’s what allows me to create something that is truly unique and special.
