We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Meagan Tamara Copelin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Meagan Tamara, thanks for joining us today. We’re complete cheeseballs and so we love asking folks to share the most heartwarming moment from their career – do you have a touching moment you can share with us?
Meagan is a Human Resources consultant, author, empowerment speaker, blogger, podcaster, and mental health counselor. Meagan’s passion is to become a trailblazing voice for young girls and women worldwide. Drawing on her own experiences of abuse, rejection, and abandonment, Meagan uses her words to encourage others to build a home within themselves; to love, live, and create fearlessly.
Meagan recently launched a Human Resources brand, Maize Consulting, and a mental health empowerment brand, Mental Rich.
Meagan believes that “A woman who believes in herself has everything.”
Throughout my childhood and the first half of my life, I struggled a lot to figure out who I was. I defined myself in relationship to others and what I was good at, but not necessarily what I wanted to learn and do. I was a “great friend”, “hard worker, “smart” and “caring”. I am still those things today, but it took me until now, in my 30s to find the life I have now, where I feel that what I do every day matches what I am meant to do in this world. I am a woman who believes in herself and loves herself today, more than ever. I am passionate about helping young girls and women thrive. I am a woman who does not look like what she has been through. I am a risk-taker. I am a leader. I am an empowered woman.
I have always been passionate about helping others since I was a young girl. I am a natural caregiver and am looking to make a difference. I am blessed that I can help others and be supportive of their needs as it feels great to be compassionate to someone else needs. I have always had an interest in helping young girls and women find their destiny. Drawing on my own experiences of abuse, rejection, and abandonment, I decided to use my words to encourage young girls and women to build a home within themselves; to love, live, and create fearlessly.
Success to me is to live the life I truly want and deserve and not just the life I settle for. Success is truly a peace of mind.
Dr. Meagan Tamara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My love for people and their struggles is evident through my work with mental health. I have been told that, my story is inspiring to many and my energy is contagious. I have overcome immense obstacles such as homelessness and mental illness with grace and perseverance. I entertain and empower audiences with my moving personal stories. My voice has helped me to be featured on several platforms for the purpose of empowering women to tell their stories from struggle to success and live up to their full potential.
But keep in mind, this was not always the case.
As a teenager and in my 20s, even at 30, I was lost and broken. I didn’t like or love myself. Now, I am a 40 year old woman and, I have learned to love every part of myself. I would tell the 21-year-old Meagan that no matter what, keep pushing and believe in yourself no matter what.
I would tell my younger self that she matters and know that no matter what, God will always provide.
Love yourself and everything else will fall into place.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and am the product of drug addicted parents. I first showed signs of depression at the age of 8 years old, due to several childhood trauma experiences. At the age of 12 years old, I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist with depression, anxiety, PTSD and bipolar disorder. At a young age, I knew I was different and battling struggles, but didn’t understand the capacity of my mental illnesses until much later in life.
I decided to become a certified mental health coach because I have experienced first-hand the stigma and torment of mental illnesses. This is also a way for me to share my story in support of reaching others who may have or currently suffer in silence. I realized early on I had a gift for guiding people through darkness. I became a mental health coach as I am human and have fought my own battles, not always with ease but with hope and determination. I never gave up on myself and wanted to show others that it is possible to overcome battles and manage mental illnesses through patience and love for themselves. It is a privilege for me to accompany people on their journey of self-understanding and change and shine some light into their life.
I am currently working on several projects, to include launching my podcast focused on mental health. The name of my podcast is “Mental Health Mogul” and I bring to the table real life experiences. I am very determined and hopeful that my podcast can shine light into the real-life experiences of battling mental health. This podcast will be real and raw, and I am excited to launch it later this year.
As a woman, I had to learn the importance of self-care. I also felt that it was important to provide myself with the opportunity to experience all the best things about life and to enjoy every minute of it, no matter my past experiences. Self-care and self-love are one of the strongest and greatest gifts women can give themselves. Self-care is essential because it encourages self-improvement. When we take care of ourselves, it has a positive influence on our overall mindset. Self-care protects your mental health.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
After working through my own challenging mental health journey, I decided to be the voice for many young girls and women who didn’t have a voice just yet. I used my own personal experience and education to become an expert in my field. I started to write about my experience then that lead to podcast and me being featured in over 100 articles, in addition to book anthologies.
It is important to speak on what you know and not what you think. Research and personal experience is the keep. Don’t just be a voice, be the change.
