We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Marcia Martin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Marcia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
Our lives can be defined by triumph or failure. One feels better than the other but both motivate us to change.
My motivation came from failure, the belief that I was powerless, and the lack of tools to make effective and lasting change possible. Change didn’t come easily to me. I tended to work hard, achieve the desired result, and criticize myself for not having achieved something better. Nothing was ever good enough so I just kept sliding deeper and deeper into depression while telling myself to try harder.
Unfortunately, trying harder can only keep you bound to the broken loop of not being good enough. When you have tools, support, and guidance you’re able to break free from what isn’t working and establish a solid foundation of what will.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My journey of discovery led me to find my purpose. Today, my work is to share what I have learned and help others step out of the darkness of despair into the light of love.
I help people recover from abuse and trauma by teaching them how to clear and heal their energetic heart space. Trauma is the damage that occurs when you’re surrounded by people who cannot see you as you are. They may try to mold you into something you don’t want to be or cannot be, they may attach labels to you or treat you with cruelty. They are the authority figures in your life or those whose opinion carries weight causing you to adjust to their view and try to be as they want you to be instead of as you are meant to be. Being exposed to this onslaught, judgment and negativity leaves a subconscious belief system that is ruling and may be ruining your life. Carl Jung stated, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” This work allows you to consciously let go of your unconscious fears and beliefs so you can live a life that feels good to your heart.
Heart healing focuses on the three pillars of success: Empowerment, Transformation, and Freedom. The techniques I share will teach you to establish and maintain heart coherence, embrace change, and grow in self-love and healing. You’ll be able to release pain and trauma from the past, as well as understand the benefits and methods to forgive one’s self and others. You’ll build the perfect relationship with yourself and be able to answer the questions, “Who am I? Why am I here? and Where am I going?”
Join me and release your greatest fear so you can achieve your biggest dreams as you heal your heart and transform your life.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
No two people experience a situation the same way so what may have been a wonderful experience for one may feel less than ideal to another.
My childhood was one of those experiences. From the outside, it looked perfect. The family was intact, stable, and committed to being of service but there’s always a weird one in every bunch and I was it. I moved into adulthood feeling as though I was lacking in every area of my life, this made it difficult to celebrate achievements so I usually skipped over that part and went back to trying harder.
I liked being helpful but had no sense of self. No understanding of self-preservation or self-love so I began moving into a cycle of self-destruction through unrestricted giving and living to please others in a misguided attempt to finally feel as though I was enough.
Looking back I see it as the beginning of my journey to my greatest joy but at the time it was a constant daily reminder of why I was lacking. It was the drip, drip, drip from the faucet of hopelessness and depression that finally brought me to my knees.
Have you ever had to pivot?
By the time I realized I’d sunken into a pit of despair nothing was left of the life I once believed I’d be living. I had lots of broken pieces from all of my experiences but I had no life raft just odds and ends that didn’t seem to fit together well.
It was time to reinvent myself but I wasn’t a fan of change. I didn’t see myself as capable across a broad spectrum just good in certain areas. I had no idea what direction to go in to find my ideal self, job, and life but I knew I had to do something differently.
And so, the search began. I started in the library while I worked a mindless job. I was drawn to the religion and spirituality section and it was there that I began to unlearn everything I believed to be true. I discovered that God is not an angry man in the sky waiting to punish every misstep but a benevolent being committed to helping you become the greatest version of yourself. As I began to grow and change from an insecure and uncertain woman to a grounded and powerful being, I realized this was why I was here. Sharing this understanding with others demanded everything from me. Every bit of education, all of my work experience, and previous life events now coalesced into a cohesive whole. I had something to offer. A perspective, a period of overcoming, a path through the darkness, and a willing heart.
Moving from being the trusted advisor in friendships to being the qualified counselor for many was the natural next step. Using the entirety of my life’s learning allowed me to excel at my work. Finding joy in every day was an added and much-beloved bonus.
