We recently connected with Dr. Maddie Wallace and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Maddie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share an anecdote or story from your schooling/training that you feel illustrates what the overall experience was like?
I was very fortunate to go to a chiropractic college that emphasized the importance being true to yourself and taking care of yourself as a prerequisite to being able to take care of others. In addition to learning about the body and how to adjust it, we were also taught how important it is to believe in yourself and your work. Through different training groups, mentors and seminars I learned how to become more self aware and conscious of not just the physical aspects of working with a person but the energetic aspects as well. Going to chiropractic college was definitely stressful at times but ultimately I left with a much deeper understanding of myself as not just a chiropractor but an individual.
Dr. Maddie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I truly believe that in order to heal we need our nervous system to be on board. Chiropractic care empowers the nervous system to function at a higher level and unlocks the innate healing power of the body. We are self-healing, self-regulating beings that are naturally design to thrive & adapt. Chiropractic aims to remove interferences that are getting in your way.
I help people live life with less limitations and more life expression. When we are out of balance, misaligned or experiencing a reoccurring unwanted symptom we are not able to fully be ourselves. We may feel limited, distracted, disconnected or dis-ease in our bodies.
I work with people of all ages & stages, from newborns to kiddos to adults and even pregnant moms. Anyone with a spine can benefit from chiropractic care!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Something I had to unlearn was the idea that there is one “right” way to do something. In truth everyone is different and certain strategies work for some people and not for others. Every individual is unique, every business is unique and you need to find what works for you. I spent a lot of time trying to emulate other people instead of trying to find out what works for me. In addition, there are seasons of life where something that worked really well in the past won’t work as well anymore and visa versa. You have to keep checking in with your self.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I believe that in order to be a good health care provider you need to be a good listener. Being able to understand where someone is coming from and empathize with them is huge. Also being able to understand their goals and why they are seeking out care improves your ability to help them.
