We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Logan Spacek, PT, DPT, PCES a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Logan, appreciate you joining us today. We’re complete cheeseballs and so we love asking folks to share the most heartwarming moment from their career – do you have a touching moment you can share with us?
There have been so many heartwarming stories from my career and I’m thankful to be in a career that I can say that! It is truly difficult to pick just one. The genuine connection I feel with my patients after helping them achieve their goals is very high on the list. Getting great feedback from patients about the way I respect their bodies during pelvic exams or that their backs haven’t felt this good in 8 years help me to know I’m making an impact. It is an honor that my patients trust me with intimate details of their lives like if they’re struggling with leaking or painful sex. It is an absolutely beautiful and heartwarming thing when all of their symptoms are gone after finishing up their physical therapy!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my business after experiencing a miscarriage and 2 difficult pregnancies & postpartum experiences. I experienced anxiety and back pain during my first pregnancy. I made a plan for my first birth that didn’t turn out as I planned. Postpartum came, and I was so unprepared. Unfortunately, I experienced insomnia, breastfeeding issues, pain, pelvic floor problems, anxiety, rage, and relationship issues with my husband and family members. I struggled with post-natal depletion and lack of sleep during my daughter’s first year. I was not given adequate resources to heal during my postpartum experience. I then got pregnant with my son at 1 year postpartum and struggled with what I now know as depression and anxiety postpartum with him after an IUD placement. About 1 year postpartum with my son, I started to feel more like myself and more recovered after my experiences. I kept feeling a calling to help mothers to prevent postpartum anxiety and depression and to learn more about holistic wellness during postpartum. I prayed about it and started writing a book on holistic wellness for prevention of mental health issues during the postpartum period. The book was meant to help first-time pregnant moms learn how to prepare for their postpartum experiences. I then expanded to helping women virtually via coaching who were already mothers and experiencing PPA/PPD, so now I have 2 books (one for pregnant moms and one for postpartum moms). Later, I expanded to serving women in pelvic physical therapy to be able to help women in the most holistic way possible, addressing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. I hope to open a holistic wellness center for women and mothers in the next few months in Waxahachie, Texas! My coworker, Dr. Brittany, and I both provide physical therapy services, and I also do coaching for women for mental/emotional health using holistic wellness techniques. I am so thankful that I prayed and listened to His call as I feel so incredibly honored to serve women in this way.
I specialize in pelvic floor therapy for women, and in particular mothers who are currently pregnant or postpartum. We have our patients fill out a full intake form & spend a lot of time getting to know them on their first appointment. We address all aspects of health including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. We do a full orthopedic evaluation after speaking with the patient about their goals and health and also an external/internal pelvic exam. We are passionate about advocating for our patients, educating our patients, and working with our patients to meet their goals. Follow-up appointments typically consist of exercise, manual therapy, and pelvic floor therapy. I do think I am well-known for my ability to empathize with my patients and to help support their mental/emotional wellness. Because I came from a background of doing mostly pediatric and adult home health physical therapy (which is very different than what I’m doing now), I am so thankful and proud that God has been able to use me to serve women in this way. I feel so honored that women allow me into their space, and I think what sets us apart are our business values, including empathy, transparency, devotion, compassion, boldness, intentionality, holistic/integrative/trauma-aware care, and nervous system centered. We hold fast to these values, and I think our patients feel that!
Have you ever had to pivot?
After graduating from physical therapy school in 2014, I was drawn to pediatric physical therapy and spent over 7 years practicing in the pediatric specialty. My plan was to continue in this work as I love kids and I’m passionate about neurological physical therapy. After my postpartum experience, I had to completely pivot and learn new orthopedic and pelvic floor skills in order to serve women during the perinatal period. It took a lot of courage to pivot in this way and a lot of time for me to develop and implement these skills with women. I think what allowed me to do it well was great support from my husband and family as well as a deep desire to serve women in this way.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to learn was to always align my plans with God’s. God’s plan is always greater than my plan. I never thought I would be a business owner, It’s the last thing I wanted to do when I graduated from physical therapy school. After struggling through my postpartum experience, I felt called to give back to women in this way utilizing the research I had done and my knowledge of the body and mind from physical therapy school. After experiencing and learning from some tough situations with other employers in 2021, I decided to move forward with our move to Waxahachie to open a holistic wellness center for women. I felt peace about the space, even though I’ve had to go through multiple trials in order to open my doors. Ultimately, I know Who holds the future for my business and my space so I’m thankful to have learned this lesson over the past few years.
