Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Lisel Lewis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dr. Lisel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share an anecdote or story from your schooling/training that you feel illustrates what the overall experience was like?
Chiropractic school was the toughest experience of my life. When I decided to go to chiropractic school… I had no idea what I was up for. I thought we were going to practice yoga all day and meditation and have philosophical discussions. NOPE. The first 2 years of Chiropractic school is as difficult as medical school. The curriculum is beyond anatomy & physiology and biochemistry and neurology and radiology and physics. The curriculum required 24/7 dedication, 100% engagement in class, studying in the library until midnight then waking up at 4am to study some more. I was not prepared for the intensity of a doctoral program… Chiropractic school was the most challenging time of my life and the most enriching. The truth is: the bigger the obstacle, the more fulfilling the reward.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Outliers… I have always been an outlier. I love black sheep. Mainstream ideas don’t fit my values. Some medications did not work well with me. Some treatments don’t appeal to me. Some “expert” advice is generic. There is a huge community of people who don’t want to abide by the textbook rules. I love those people. Chiropractic is not the first recommendation for people who are experiencing dis-ease, but chiropractic care is the number 1 thing in the world that helped me achieve natural health. Your body is self healing. Chiropractic adjustments allow for your body to self heal. My favorite population to serve are people who have “tried everything”, and maybe chiropractic was their last resort. Those people can heal too. Once they are under regular chiropractic care, their body starts to heal. It’s my mission to educate people on this and my hope is they share their experience.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When you become a chiropractor, you have to be prepared for people to say they “don’t believe” in chiropractic, or that their doctor told them chiropractic won’t work. Chiropractic adjustments on the spine allow for motion and provide space between the discs & nerves that travel throughout your body. With proper nerve flow, your body functions properly. There is no “belief” necessary when you’re under chiropractic care. It’s just anatomy. Chiropractic works. Anyone who says otherwise does not understand anatomy.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Hell ya.
