We recently connected with Dr. Kyle Elliott and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Kyle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I won the “parent jackpot.” While I’ve worked hard to build my career coaching business, I’m incredibly lucky to have been born to parents who unconditionally love and support me. Not only have my parents always encouraged me to pursue my passions and dreams, but they have also enabled and empowered me to march to the best of my own drum, which has been critical for my success as a coach and entrepreneur.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a tech career coach, interview coach, and trusted confidant to Silicon Valley’s top talent.
I began this journey on Fiverr, the online marketplace, while in college and charged five dollars to review resumes and write LinkedIn profile summaries.
I help senior managers and executives in Silicon Valley get unstuck, own their fabulousness, and achieve what they never imagined was possible.
My clients work for the globe’s top tech companies and live lives they never imagined were possible as a result of our work together.
I am unique from other coaches because I believe at least 99% of the answers sit within my clients, and my role is to simply ask the right questions to help clients find those answers. My single rule when working with clients is that they cannot say, “I don’t know.”
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’m a recovering workaholic, perfectionist, and people pleaser, and have had to learn how to take time away from work to prevent burnout.
As a high performer, I was rewarded for working hard, at least earlier in my career. However, this quickly led to burnout, exhaustion, and resentment.
Through lots of therapy, self-care, and the support of my community, I learned to find purpose and meaning outside of my work and career.
While it’s still a work in progress, I’m now much better at taking time away from the (virtual) office, and it makes me a better coach and human.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I am committed to delivering a “Disneyland Experience” to every client I work with.
In other words, I want the coaching I deliver to not only be backed by tons of research, data, and hands-on experience, but I also want the journey to be one that can’t be replicated or found anywhere else on Earth.
I want clients to leave every session, email, and interaction feeling like they are unique, special, and fabulous — because they are!
