Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Kristelle Beecher. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dr. Kristelle, appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
As many of us do, I’ve dealt with many depleting situations with cultures, leadership, and roles that didn’t align with who I was, and ultimately these stressors added to the mental health challenges I was already trying to manage. Over time, I recognized more of what I really enjoyed doing, what contributed to my success, and I recognized “non-negotiables.” I’ve learned how to take ownership of my career and in totality, my life.
I’ve also made mistakes in my career by choosing what I thought I should do, or by doing what I technically could do. Ultimately, I ignored what I later learned to be my “Zone of Genius:” creatively helping others solve soul-quenching questions. Through my experience, I’ve seen that the happiest and most successful people are those that prioritize intrinsic capabilities and competencies, and stick to them in their careers. Your interests are important, but is it your “life work?”
My natural desire is to help people create the confidence and strategies to bridge gaps between who they are innately and the life they crave. Your career is a valuable part of your life, and right now 50% of people in the US are stressed daily at work. Could it be that some of us are forcing our design into someone else’s?
Good news – It is never too late to take the step. I do not regret any step I’ve taken, and starting my business officially in early 2022 was the perfect timing. It happened at a time when my body was craving freedom and I needed a sense of self. I think any sooner, there wouldn’t have been a true desire for me to stick to building my own shop. I know more than ever now that my life is my choice, and I have the power to get up and do whatever it is I need or want to at any stage.
Our desires and dreams are not embedded within us by coincidence, but they do need planning and guidance. Every day I understand more that life has its timing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a lover of people in all that I do. From my mental health blog to my creative approach to coaching people in their careers and lives, I aim to strip people back to their core.
I’ve launched a career development and mindset mastery business named The Creative Corporate, which focuses on the whole person in any work environment, not just the employee mask we sometimes put on from 9-5. The Creative Corporate offers career and mindset coaching for the professional that doesn’t want a cookie-cutter approach to managing their careers.
What I do is help people create the confidence and strategies to bridge gaps between who they are innately and the career they want. This is a valuable process to take because during this “Great Resignation,” many people are wondering if the traditional workplace is still for them. I help to guide individuals through what works for them by leveraging personality psychology and employee mental health research I conducted in my PhD program. I move past more than “feel good” talk that sometimes gets repurposed in a busy and saturated market.
I blend experiences from my life, roles, and education. I have a BA in Mass Communications and Journalism, an MBA in Human Resources, and a PhD in Psychology. Above all, I am a proponent of mental health, no matter which track of life someone is in.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My resilience is somehow tested in every season of my life! For instance, when I was 19, I had my son and became a single mother. This was so scary to me because I was a teenager. Reflecting on this now, I went into fight or flight mode. Thankfully, I decided to fight and I faced the challenge of navigating what being a single mother would entail.
I chalk a lot of my resilience up to having wonderful examples from my parents. I was raised by immigrant parents from Jamaica. Being a first-generation American, and recognizing the barriers they overcame, highlighted the importance of making the most of the opportunities I was given. My mother came to America with education and experience but couldn’t even land a job at Popeyes. She had to go back to school to basically prove her worth, while my father had to work crazy hours to help support the family and still make it on time to pick us up from school. My mom pushed past the roadblocks and earned her doctorate and my dad now works in law enforcement which was his dream. Their life experiences taught me there is no choice but to be greater than my circumstances – they’d already proved it was possible. For that, I am forever grateful.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
A focal part of my business is helping people to brand their truest selves. I appreciate the fact that I was able to leverage the power of social media early in its heyday and build a following. I learn new techniques every day to move with the ever-changing world of new media and this is a skill set I teach in my program with clients.
From the days of Hi5, MySpace, Facebook, and now Instagram, I made my personality shine through. I posted my wittiest and sometimes vulnerable content to my following and network because I always viewed social media as a platform of expression. Being a writer, I started with poetry about the woes of being a teenager on Myspace, and moved into blogging while using my platforms as a marketing tool.
At first, it was all about how large my following could be. I made mistakes in building an audience where I did have a good amount of people who engaged with my websites, blogs, and businesses, but I focused more on posting great photos to get likes and follows. I realized as I grew in loving myself and grew out of trying to “be” a brand, that the most genuine network and community you can have, show up when you are authentic.
I remind my clients that they are the brand! Brands are built on the person, business, and reputation YOU create over time. So if you are building a business or presenting yourself in a way that is inauthentic to you, you will not only have a misaligned audience, you’ll have a misaligned goal and end result. It is best to show up as you, and if you are not sure who that person is yet, this is exactly what The Creative Corporate helps individuals to do.
