We were lucky to catch up with Dr King recently and have shared our conversation below.
DR , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I was a school teacher and going to grad school full time. I wasn’t happy. A friend recommended me for a gig in Japan singing at a club 6 nights a week. I quit everything and jumped on a plane and took a chance on myself. That one decision taught me to believe in myself and trust my gut. After my contract was up in Japan, I moved back home to Cleveland. Nothing was going for me there. A friend asked me to come to NYC with her to audition for The Voice. I auditioned and made it a few rounds but was then cut. That time in NYC reminded of being in Japan. I thought to myself “I could live here”. Two weeks later I packed 2 bags and took another chance on myself. The first day I arrived I auditioned for an off broadway show and booked it. That was my sign that I made the right choice to move. I hit the streets of NYC and quickly started working as a singer in all the clubs and with all the major event companies. Fast forward a few years in I got and opportunity to do a private audition for The Voice. That time I booked the show and went on to be a Top 12 finalists. Living in NYC has afforded me so many opportunities. I’ve sang bgv for so many major artists and traveled all over the world.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started singing at a young age. I went to middle and high school at Cleveland school of the Arts. Music was always a passion. I didn’t really take it seriously until I moved to Japan and saw the earning potential. Now I sing full time all over the world.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part about being a performer is making people’s special day a memory they will never forget.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I told my family I was moving to Japan they thought I was crazy. Then when I said I was moving to NYC they tried to talk me out of it. Sometimes you have go with your gut even if family and friends don’t see what you see. If I didn’t believe in me no one would believe. Now I’m here and have been here successfully for 12 years and counting.
