We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Kayla Borchers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hey, there! I’m Dr. Kayla, a physical therapy and holistic wellness private practice owner serving clients in Columbus, Ohio and Virtually worldwide. After working in a renowned yet traditional Sports Medicine clinic for over five years, I knew there had to be a better way to help my patients heal more fully. So often we were treating clients retroactively instead of proactively. I was meeting people when they were at the point of pain requiring surgery or intense pharmaceuticals such as opioids. While on maternity leave with my second child, I dreamed of serving the whole person. Of getting to the root cause of a client’s symptoms. Helping people proactively address their aches and pains prior to being in unbearable discomfort. My passions especially aligned with women wanting to remain active and pain-free during pregnancy and postpartum. As my own first client in this realm, I was able to help myself remain active and enjoy the pregnancy and postpartum phases of life. I wanted this same outcome for other women, too! Behind the scenes, my husband and I worked to establish my own private practice. We filed for an LLC, developed my website from scratch, had branding photos taken and I gave my 2 weeks notice to my full time gig. A full 9 months after the wheels started turning to launch my private practice, my doors opened publicly. It has been a dream to serve clients with an integrative, functional medicine approach to care. I truly blend Eastern and Western medical approaches to treatment that are all science-backed yet holistically applied in order to optimally empower client’s healing journeys.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would choose the same specialty?
Yes, I would! According to the American Physical Therapy Association, “Physical therapists are movement experts who improve quality of life through prescribed exercise, hands-on care, and patient education. Many patients have injuries, disabilities, or other health conditions that need treatment. But PTs also care for people who simply want to become healthier and to prevent future problems.”
This definition beautifully outlines why I went in to this field: to improve quality of life. Through my private practice, I now have the ability to more whole-heartedly live this out. Helping others maximize their quality of life is the most rewarding skill. I am grateful to be in a position to positively impact others’ lives, particularly before, during and after pregnancy. This transformative time in a family’s life is such a special season to be a part of as a provider focused on helping the mother feel her best while growing and delivering new life into this world.
Have you ever had to pivot?
After launching my physical therapy and holistic wellness private practice from a yoga studio, I had to pivot 7 months in to a new location. I was fearful that I would lose clientele due to a location change. I was nervous about serving from a new space and how that layout would flow. Yet, I was excited about the opportunities this new location presented. This leap to a new office resulted in back to back record-setting months for me. A huge sigh of relief was breathed that this, indeed, was the right transition. I now have co-workers in my new space and the opportunity for collaborations which feels incredibly aligned with the holistic care I seek to provide my clients with. The space also offers recreation rooms in which I am still able to provide yoga classes and in-person workshops, which is incredibly uplifting from a community building perspective! With pivots in life and in business, there is always going to be fear about the outcome. My biggest piece of advice: write out the pros and cons, then go on a walk. Clear your mind with fresh air and (hopefully!) sunshine. Come back to your list. What feels right in your gut. Where is your heart leading you? Go there, and don’t look back!
