Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Kate Lyzenga-Dean. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dr. Kate, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
The most important lesson I learned when I worked as part of a multi-provider healthcare practice is that my unique style and perspective is a strength, not a weakness. It was tempting, as the most junior member of the practice, to imitate my colleagues instead of doing things my own way. But I quickly found that my personality and approach resonated with my patients and clients differently, and that it made me a better fit as a healthcare partner for certain people. Now, when I speak with new providers, I always encourage them to embrace (and even flaunt) their uniqueness!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I help busy people get the root of their health challenges using Functional Medicine. I’m passionate about creating digital resources that educate wellness-seekers about ALL their treatment options – focusing on science-based nutritional, lifestyle, and preventative strategies that conventional medicine often neglects. After a decade of in-person private practice, I shifted my focus to virtual consultation services in order to spend more time with my clients and broaden access to critical Functional Medicine care. Folks love the affordability and convenience! There are plenty of wellness gurus who tout extreme diets, fitness regimens, and overwhelming treatment protocols, but my approach focuses on balance, sustainability, and actually treating the cause of health concerns instead of simply band-aiding or managing them.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I’ve found that creating content that answers potential clients’ questions – as fully and completely as possible – has been the best way to inspire trust and grow interest in my services. Early in my marketing journey, I got tired of chasing algorithms and utilizing sales tactics. Instead, I focused on providing quality education on topics that people were actually asking about in the form of articles, videos, and podcast episodes. I’m not talking about surface-level stuff, but real, actionable information that folks can use right now – without ever engaging with me or my offerings. By giving away my best advice, recommendations, and resources on a topic, I’m demonstrating that my clients also get my full efforts, knowledge, and experience. And because I provide a deep-dive – way more than the typical cliched advice – it reassures them that working with me will be specific and personalized to their individual needs and circumstances. And it’s sharable, which makes it easy for my happy clients to refer their friends and family my way!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the lessons I had to unlearn when I started my own practice is that you don’t have to be big to be successful. I came from a high-volume practice where numbers were everything – where more patients meant more success. But, when I transitioned into a consultation model where overhead is low, logistics and systems are optimized, and patient satisfaction maximized, I discovered that I didn’t need massive numbers to succeed, financially or in terms of my own professional satisfaction. You don’t have to be famous, have a huge social media following, spend only a few minutes with each client, or get 10 new clients a week in order to grow. That realization was very freeing for me.
