We recently connected with Dr. Kate Campbell and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dr. Kate thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents did a lot of things right while I was growing up, but we had our fair share of struggles during my teenage years. We’ve been through a lot over the years. I am grateful for the values they instilled in me and for my close relationship with them to this day.
I grew up in a family of hard-working entrepreneurs, which is where my entrepreneurial spirit was born. From a young age, my parents instilled a very strong work ethic in me, which has been a great resource throughout my life.
When I was a child, my younger sister, Kristen, started horseback riding lessons to help with a medical issue she was born with. One day, I went with her and my mom to the barn and absolutely fell in love with the whole experience.
I begged my parents to let me start riding horses too, but it was a very expensive sport and they told me I would have to work to pay for the lessons. At a young age, I started cleaning stalls to pay for my weekly riding lessons. It didn’t take long before I wanted to take lessons more frequently so I cleaned more and more stalls. Eventually, we leased a horse and I worked at the barn to help pay for it.
The equestrian sport takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and practice. I enjoyed taking care of the horses, riding for fun and competitively, and even mucking stalls. I loved it all so much that the hard work, early mornings, and long days didn’t even feel like work. I began competing in dressage and as I excelled winning lots of events across the southeastern United States. It was an amazing experience and I’m so grateful for my parent’s support.
Those years spent at the barn working and riding horses were a wonderful time in my life. It taught me a lot of life lessons and I grew tremendously from those experiences. I learned to believe in myself, to work hard for what I want in life, and to never give up on my dreams.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Although hospitality and entrepreneurship run deep in my family, I didn’t go to formal business school or get an MBA. When I graduated with my Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University in 2006, I went on a mission to learn as much as I could about business, marketing, and leadership.
As an entrepreneur, it’s really helpful to get training in management and leadership so you can build a team that is in alignment with your vision, mission, and culture. When you’re clear on those aspects of your business it gives you a solid foundation and guides all of your business decisions.
Your vision, mission, and culture become the guide post for decisions like hiring the right team members. Creating and nurturing a positive, collaborative, and uplifting culture for your team is super important. Try to find team members for specific roles where their responsibilities are in their zone of genius, because that’s when they will do their best work, people will be served in the best way possible, and everyone benefits.
