We recently connected with Dr. Kara Montz and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dr. Kara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
Yes, there definitely was. In my first years after graduating, I had a very challenging time trying to decide what I wanted my focus to be. I felt like everyone around me knew, but one just wasn’t clicking for me. Every time I felt that I found one, I quickly realized it wasn’t something that I could sustainably do for the duration of my career. Little did I know that it was all a part of the plan, I just couldn’t see it yet. I went through my own very deep inner healing at the end of 2020 which led me to realize that I was ready to be a mom. A couple months later I was pregnant with my son. This is where it all clicked. I saw how important it was for moms to do their own inner healing so they don’t pass their traumas onto their children. Now my main focus in all the work that I do is how can I support more moms heal their lives and the generations to come.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a Naturopathic Doctor that currently lives in Buffalo, NY where I do client consultations both virtually and in person. I graduated from SUNY University at Buffalo before getting my degree at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, which is one of the few recognized naturopathic medical schools in North America.
I always knew I wanted to be in the health field, but I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do. I started to do everything on the track to become an MD or DO, but there was something in my gut telling me it wasn’t right. That was confirmed at an open house for a school in Pennsylvania that I absolutely loved, but still just had a pit in my stomach about it. I wanted something with a natural approach that would actually teach people how to lead healthy lives. I didn’t want to heavily rely on prescription medications in practice and I felt like if I went the conventional route I would be forced to. After searching around, CCNM came up and I started learning about naturopathic medicine. I visited a couple schools, applied and the rest is history.
I mainly work with women and moms that have not been able to get answers for years to their health problems from conventional medicine. It’s really important to note that it’s possible for conventional and alternative medicine to coexist. There’s a time and a place for everything. I’m not against conventional medicine, which is a common misconception when people hear that I’m a Naturopathic Doctor. Many long term illnesses can be prevented through the use of naturopathic medicine and a healthy lifestyle, but a lot of the time people get to the point where they feel like they’re too far gone to incorporate natural healing. It’s always easier to start earlier on, but I encourage people not to deprive themselves just on this fact alone, it’s better to start now than never.
I especially love working with moms because they’re usually so unsupported, yet they’re the ones that need support the most. My goal is to help them heal physically, mentally and emotionally because they deserve to have a happy, healthy and fulfilling life. A wonderful bonus is that when they heal themselves, they heal the generations to come. That’s what I’m most proud of, knowing that each woman I work with will pass their healing ways on to their families which creates this incredible ripple effect.
I recently started an online community, “Moms Wellness Space” where moms can come together for support but also learn about natural healing with me through monthly workshops. I’m really excited to watch this grow because I know it’s a way to reach a lot of moms that may not have access to good support otherwise. It’s a lot of fun being able to meet with moms live every month and help them get started on their healing journey.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A belief I had was that life was happening to me and I didn’t have any control over it. That left me feeling helpless and really hopeless at times, because I felt like it didn’t matter what I did because inevitably something negative would happen. I finally learned that life is actually happening for me and I absolutely do have control over how it goes. We get to decide how to react in every moment of every day and that shapes our reality indefinitely. The perspective we have on it is ours to make. That’s the most important part. By adopting this and seeing life unfold in such a different light is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I’ve been able to change my life in more ways than I can count because of this simple mindset shift.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absolutely. Every step on my path has helped me to land exactly where I need to be. Healings moms and families is my true calling and I would have never come to this realization without it. There were many times that I couldn’t see at all how certain things happening in my life was going to help me in my future, but it all makes sense now. I couldn’t be more grateful that I get to teach people how to live happy, healthy, fulfilling lives and remind them that they are capable of healing holistically.
