We recently connected with Dr. Joi Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dr. Joi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
As a child, I grew up believing in the “I Can” mantra. I could achieve anything that I set my mind to and dreams can come true. I was told by my grandma and later confirmed by others that I am a Joi to this world.
I was told I was ambitious, beautiful, bold, caring, confident, daring, determined, fearless, intelligent, powerful, and strong.
I learned as a young girl, I had gifts and talents to inspire, encourage, and motivate others. I bring Joi to places and spaces and touch lives. Growing up in the human resources industry from HR Intern to HR Director, I have educated, equipped, and empowered people and organizations to achieve goals and be great. I used my calling in life and my favorite number to launch 3eee Consulting.
Launching 3EEE Consulting is where I educate, equip, and empower people and organizations through coaching, conversations, and workshops in career and entrepreneur development, conflict resolution, goal setting, health and wellness, leadership and team development, and personal and professional branding.
I stand as a witness, that each day I live a day of purpose using my gifts and talents in everything that I do. I live out my life’s motto “If I can help somebody along the journey called life with a word or song, then my living will not be in vain.”

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Have you ever had to pivot?
The entrepreneur journey is like a roller coaster filled with ups, downs, and curves. Sometimes you go forward and sometimes you go backward. The one word the world learned during the COVID-19 pandemic was “pivot.” I launched my Sensational Perfume Chick business in 1999 and enjoyed selling shea butter at various in-person events. I increased my inventory and was looking forward to booking new events in 2020.
When in-person events came to a halt, I learned to pivot quickly. I created my website with pictures and descriptions of all my shea butter. I designed social media posts and promotions that increased my customer base. I called myself the distributor that delivered and delivered the customer’s favorite shea butter to their door. Four years later, my business has done very well. I have increased the shea butter inventory, customers, and delivery options to include shipping, delivery, or pick-up.
During the pandemic, I learned how to take a challenge and turn it into an opportunity, and that is a great life lesson that I live by.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I applied for my first supervisory position and got the job, I was so happy, I became the Branch Chief of Human Capital and was responsible for overseeing all human capital programs. Within my first year, the agency was undergoing an agency transformation, and my new position was impacted.
I was being downgraded and still responsible for leading the transformation effort as the Branch Chief. Going through this was very hard. Every day, I showed up with a smile and did my job to the best of my ability. I never complained or had a why me attitude. I showed up as I always did. Within those two years, I was able to go on a temporary assignment to another office to serve as a Program Manager to plan and implement a department-wide cybersecurity internship program. If you recall I started my federal career as an intern and now I am overseeing and leading an enterprise-wide internship program. I was prepared and positioned for this role.
The transformation was my hardest career challenge it became my greatest testimony. I ended up receiving a permanent position in the office and ended up making more money than I ever had.
In all my life tests, I had to believe in myself and declare that greater was ahead. No matter what the situation looked like, I did not give up but continued to speak life over the situation. I continued to show up despite what I was going through. It matters how you show up in life.
