We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Jesse Sanders. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr Jesse below.
Dr. Jesse, appreciate you joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
I have been permitted to maneuver in environments that have granted me the opportunity to continuously cultivate and be the redefining mental health therapist I have been predestined to be. I have become knowledgeable in the fact that although there are multiple mental health therapists, speakers, influencers, etc. we all are distinctive and several of us have been positioned to disrupt the conventional structure and create a space for our colleagues and those that support us.
Between my mentor and I, I have learned to implement some commanding thought provoking wisdom to continue on the road of success, which are: Don’t be Afraid to Ask Yourself Questions; Take Time to Reflect, Knowing What I Need in my Career and How it will Provide Meaningful Change for Me and Others, Network and Build My Brand, Maintain a Healthy Ecosystem Both Personally and Professionally, Know My Value and Not Allowing Others To Discount Me or Place Myself or My Gift on Clearance, and I have the Ability to Empower and Be Empowered!
Dr. Jesse, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Dr. Jesse Sanders, Ph.D., your Redefining Mental Health Therapist, Speaker, Public Figure, Influencer, Conversationalist, and Best-Selling Author. I have two amazing daughters, Brianna, and Brielle. Also, I am a new grandfather to Elias “Little Man”.
I am “Having Relevant Conversations to Redefine Lives in a Radical Way”
I provide therapeutic and social support to individuals and families who are living at the intersections of multiple oppressions. By supporting individuals & families in our community. I aim to uncover the root of that oppression, & redefine their identities through positive, inclusive & expressive means. I want to help those have been oppressed, self-realize, and self-actualize their life on their own terms and be able to find their identity and purpose.
I believe that the best thing that sets me apart from some other therapists is my transparency. I am willing to talk about my own mental health and share my personal struggles with clients. I also offer a more holistic approach, which includes mindfulness and body-based practices as well as traditional talk therapy. I redefine what it means to be a therapist by being different from some other therapists in the way that I set out to help people with a revolutionary approach, living their lives with love and compassion.
I also redefine what love means for my clients. It’s not about having the perfect relationship(s) or the perfect partner, but instead being able to find love within yourself and in others around you.
The oppression that many of my clients are facing is something that sets me apart as well. My goal is to help them find their voice and become an advocate for themselves when they need to because it’s important for them to know their worth and value as a person.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
In the words of myself and my ex-wife and co-parent, Liatresia, “I keep the main thing, the main thing” and I remain in my lane. I differentiate myself from others by being focused on my niche market and redefining my approach to my clients/followers and their specific needs. I continuously add more expertise and become knowledgeable about certain topics which allows me to stand out from others.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
From the commencement of this distinguishing journey, I had to illustrate resilience. Because I am a single and co-parenting father, most of the time we did not have an uninteresting minute in our home and that stands true to this day, including with my remarkable and animated grandson…lol. At the time I concluded to capture my art and profession and begin to construct the best version of myself, my oldest daughter was attending acting classes and my youngest daughter was attending gymnastics.
I of course worked a full-time job. I had to methodically select an accountability partner, which I think everyone should have one. My accountability partner and sister Brandy, as well as my best friend Doug had complete knowledge of my responsibilities and goals. There were check-ins that took place. In addition, I created a schedule for myself so that I could balance my full schedule.
Equally, I reminded myself that I did not make the conscious decision to go back to school to simply obtain any degree. But I elected to go back and obtain a degree that would not only redefine my life, but also the lives of those that I serve. Affirmation is also a great way to stay motivated and focused. However, let me be clear, I am not stating there were not some dark or exhausting days. Yet, I reminded myself that our words are the storeroom of power, and we possess that power.
