Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Jess Germano-Fokin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dr. Jess, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
Our minds and emotions are intrinsically tied to our bodies. In my research and working within the community, I have always noticed a gap in patient care when it comes to sexual health & intimate wellness, as it relates to medical and behavioral health. At times, these factors are cyclical, integrative, and of equal importance when providing patient care. We must look at all overlapping factors, as focusing on only one of these areas is doing a disservice to patients and providers. With this said, I created an integrative model that focuses on four main quadrants: Mental Health & Wellbeing, Personal-Physical Health & Wellbeing, Sexual Health & Wellbeing, and Intimate Wellness & Relationships. My practice uses an individualized, personalized, specialized care model to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am very straightforward and no bullshit with my patients when saying to them as they first walk into my office or virtual office, “This sh*t is not easy!” It takes hard work, strength, determination, and willpower. I commend them for making that big first step in knowing they are well-deserving of feeling better and being their best self!
I emphasize that “it” will not just go away; “it” will be a part of you, BUT it does not need to define you!!! I work with my patients in creating a safe space where therapy can be real, raw and authentic. We will work on understanding “it” (whatever it might be), identify tools to manage and maintain “it”, and work towards living the happy, healthy, fulfilling lifestyle that you are well-deserving of living.
My passion is assisting individuals in areas including, but not limited to: loving yourself, dating, intimate and partner communication, relationship concerns, intimacy issues, gender identity, body image, self-esteem and sex-esteem, anxiety and depression, sexual orientation, sexual trauma, sexual difficulties, sexual pleasures, discovering and embracing your sexual self, developing and maintaining a healthy and pleasurable relationship, and (Re)creating the spark in your intimacy.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I am real, raw and authentic with my patients in meeting them where they are at, understanding what is going on for them, and helping them to identify the best path moving forward on their journey. In doing so, I do not practice what I call a “strict medical approach”, but rather, I practice more what I call a “family oriented approach”, where I work with my patients in establishing healthy boundaries with patient and provider to create a holistic and integrative care plan that does not just take place in our 50-minute sessions. It is comprehensive and consistent both inside and outside of our sessions to instill rewiring brain and body connectivity to be more positive and pleasurable.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I think it is imperative to have an individualized and personalized care plan for each of your patients, rather than a “cookie-cutter approach” because what works for one, might not work for another. It is also imperative to have comprehensive, collaborative and integrative care so that factors don’t “falls through the cracks” or we do not provide a “bandaid approach”. I always emphasize to my patients that if I only focus on the presenting concern/s that I would be doing them a disservice and they would find themselves cycling back into the same issues and/or something more significant or possibly even more severe.
