Dr. Jennifer , appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most significant mental health projects I have had the privilege of working on is Mental Health Talk with Lennix James, featuring an interview with renowned actor Ron Godfrey. In this interview, Mr. Godfrey bravely shares his personal experiences of trauma that led to depression, as detailed in his book, “Crying Out in The Dark.” Moreover, he discusses his journey of recovery and how he utilizes his platform to raise awareness and combat the stigma surrounding mental health issues. The genesis of this podcast stems from my profound admiration for Mr. Godfrey’s book, which was published on December 15, 2020. Through his introspective exploration of the locations and individuals involved in his breakdown, he seeks to comprehend the events that transpired and their underlying causes. His courage and candor deeply moved me, prompting my desire to delve further into his narrative and gain insight into his perspective on mental health. Initially, I was introduced to Mr. Godfrey through my cousin, Pamela Clay, via Facebook. Subsequently, I reached out to him via his agent, and he graciously agreed to participate in an interview for my podcast. While I prepared a set of questions, I also allowed him the freedom to guide the conversation and share what he felt comfortable discussing. Utilizing Riverside, we recorded the podcast, engaging in a candid and enlightening dialogue. Mr. Godfrey openly discussed his upbringing, career, breakdown, recovery, and advocacy efforts. Additionally, he offered valuable advice for individuals grappling with their mental health or supporting loved ones facing similar challenges. This particular podcast holds immense significance for me due to its potential to assist numerous individuals navigating comparable struggles or seeking a deeper understanding of depression and mental health as a whole. Mr. Godfrey, a highly accomplished and respected actor, exemplifies the resilience of the human spirit, having triumphed over adversity. He serves as a role model and a voice for those who may feel isolated or misunderstood. Furthermore, he confronts the stereotypes and stigma often associated with mental health issues, particularly within the Black community. I express my utmost gratitude for his consent to participate in this podcast with me, and I trust that it will serve as a source of inspiration and enlightenment for numerous listeners. Should others be inclined to partake in this podcast, it is readily available on various platforms including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music, Radio Public, and iHeartRadio under the name Lennix James.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was raised in Mount Olive, North Carolina. From a young age, I have held a deep interest in community engagement. At the age of 11, I became a member of my local NAACP chapter, and since then, I have always found joy in assisting others within my community. The concept of community engagement holds great significance to me, as my parents instilled in me the belief that it is our inherent duty to positively and effectively contribute to our community. Consequently, I pursued higher education to equip myself with the necessary knowledge and skills to fulfill this calling. I first obtained an Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts, followed by a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. While working as a special educator and mental health paraprofessional, I furthered my education by earning a Master’s in Business Administration and a Master’s of Science in Human Performance Improvement. During this time, I actively engaged with students, families, and community members, and I also became involved in various local and state organizations dedicated to serving our community. In 2017, I received a divine vision for the establishment of the Lennix James Foundation, but I initially hesitated to pursue this purpose due to my fear of addressing mental health stigmas and issues. Nevertheless, I persisted in my educational pursuits and obtained a Doctorate in Business Administration, as well as my N.C. Peer Support Specialist certification. In 2021, I successfully relaunched the Lennix James Foundation, LLC. Through this platform, I have organized mental health forums and will continue to educate others about the stigmas and barriers surrounding mental health through my podcast. The unwavering support I receive from my family, community members, and local organizations brings immense fulfillment to my work, and I am grateful for every opportunity that comes my way. In addition to my mental health podcast, I have published a total of nine books, ten journals, and one coloring book on topics related to mental health, self-care, affirmations, empowerment, and overall well-being, which are available for purchase on Amazon.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I was born with Klippel Feil Syndrome Type 1, a congenital condition characterized by fusions in my body. Since my early years, I have consistently experienced chronic neck and back pain. However, it was not until later in my adult life that I fully comprehended the extent of my diagnosis. Regrettably, due to the lack of visible physical symptoms, individuals often assumed that I was fabricating my discomfort or simply complaining. In 2013, my health significantly deteriorated. Initially, I received a misdiagnosis of multiple sclerosis, which had a detrimental impact on both my mental and physical well-being. The resulting stress and worry led to severe depression, causing a substantial weight loss from a size 8 to a size 4. Seeking a second opinion, I finally received an accurate diagnosis of a neuromuscular/skeletal disorder that mimics symptoms of MS. In October 2013, during my MBA capstone project, my mobility became severely impaired and restricted. The project was scheduled to conclude in December 2013. Fortunately, I was able to collaborate with the university’s accommodation office, which granted me permission to utilize adaptive technology for typing my papers and completing assignments for both of my graduate degrees. Despite the numerous challenges I encountered, my college advisor encouraged me to enroll in an additional three classes to pursue a Master’s in Performance Improvement. Initially hesitant, I ultimately decided to proceed, despite the physical and mental obstacles. My resilience paid off, as I officially graduated with distinction in February 2014 and again in September 2016. Overcoming these challenges ultimately led to the attainment of my Doctorate of Business Administration in 2021.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My primary motivation behind engaging in podcasting, writing books, and contributing to journals is to impart knowledge to listeners regarding various aspects of psychology and mental health. This includes providing information on symptoms, causes, and coping strategies for different conditions and challenges. Moreover, my intention is to inspire listeners to actively seek assistance, prioritize self-care, and improve their overall well-being by offering practical advice, tips, and resources from experts or individuals who have successfully overcome their own struggles. Furthermore, I am committed to empowering listeners to challenge the societal stigma and silence surrounding mental health. I strive to create a secure and supportive environment that encourages honest and open conversations. By empathizing with listeners and validating their feelings, experiences, and perspectives, I aim to reassure them that they are not alone in their struggles. I have had the privilege of participating in numerous mental health panels, but I take particular pride in my involvement in the Durham Celebrates Recovery Celebration on September 29, 2023. Despite the prevailing stigma and harmful stereotypes associated with mental health, individuals possess the capacity to lead meaningful lives. Sharing my personal experiences with others serves as a catalyst for my unwavering dedication to advocating and educating through both podcasting and in-person engagements.
