We recently connected with Dr. Jennifer Matthews and have shared our conversation below.

Dr. Jennifer , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?

I am extremely happy owning and operating my own private security company, Paramount Security Analytics. I recently started the certified Women-Owned Small Business and Women Business Enterprise private security company in June of 2023. At Paramount Security Analytics, we provide Armed/Unarmed professional security services for businesses, parking lots, events, VIPs, retail stores, etc. Paramount Security Analytics security personnel are equipped with the necessary skill sets to provide a safe and secure environment, preventing unauthorized access, theft, vandalism, and violence.

The process of getting licensed and insured was not an easy or cheap one. Not just anyone can become a licensed private security contractor. There are certain requirements and criteria that a person must meet before they are even able to apply for the test. However, I knew I had the requirements and that I could excel at starting my own business. So through my motivation and determination, I was able to remain persistent and diligent throughout the entire process.

I have had a “regular job” my entire life. There is nothing wrong with that. However, my goal is to create generational wealth for myself and my family. The only way I can see myself being successful at accomplishing that goal is by starting something from the ground up. When I pondered my future, I always saw my finances being capped because I worked for someone else. By going into business for myself, I am able to take the cap off of my salary growth.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

I am a public speaker, educator, and thought leader dedicated to inspiring individuals and organizations to reach their full potential. I have a very niche background in criminal justice. I am a subject matter expert in police-worn body cameras, digital media, and closed-circuit television media. I have 16 + years of hands-on and educational experience in the field of criminal justice. I am a third-generation law enforcement in my family as well. I am a driving force behind digital transformations to help solve cases quicker with body-worn cameras. Body-worn cameras create a safer world, help victims fight for justice, and protect the lives of the innocent.

I own and operate a second business as well. My consulting company, Dr. Jennifer Matthews Consulting, is certified in Disadvantaged Business Enterprises and Women/Minority Business Enterprise. At Dr. Jennifer Matthews Consulting, we are driven by a paramount mission: to enlighten both the public and law enforcement on the efficacy and proficient use of body cameras. What sets my business apart is the profound dedication to fostering awareness and competence in this critical area. At Dr. Jennifer Matthews Consulting, we aim to bring about positive societal transformation that resonates within communities and extends beyond. At my consulting company, I help my clients by analyzing/enhancing their video footage. Or if they need expert witness testimony regarding a court case that involves video, I am here for them.

I published a book in July 2023 on Amazon entitled: Guardians of Transparency: Illuminating the Path of Body Cameras for a Safer Tomorrow.

This book is for the person who knows nothing about body cameras and for the person who knows everything about body cameras. There is something in the book for everyone.

The main thing that I would like everyone to know is that they do not have to be afraid of body cameras. Once they are educated on their purpose and how to use them, they will be able to understand that body cameras are a neutral third-party witness to situations that help tell the story when words can’t.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

A lesson I had to unlearn is that not everyone has the same work ethic. When I began hiring for Paramount Security Analytics, I believed that all security guards were created equal. I quickly found out that was not the case. I found out that age was a big factor, previous experience, prior training, home life circumstances, etc. The list can go on forever. Each person that I hired came with different traits that I had to assess to see if they would be a good fit for the business. It took some time but I was finally able to hire a professional, highly-trained, well-competent, customer service-oriented, and customer-focused staff.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

I think what has helped me build my reputation within my market has been consistency.
