We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Jamie Bovay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Jamie, thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
My defining moment in my career was when I quit my job and stopped wanting to do physical therapy anymore. Previous to this moment I had taken great pride in my career and how I was able to help people. I had been able to help people who were suffering and who had failed rehab with other providers and it was a wonderful feeling. Over time the clinic I was at focused more and more on numbers and seeing multiple patients at once instead of the high quality of care I was used to giving and had built a reputation on. All of the sudden less people were getting better and it wasn’t because I couldn’t help them, it was because I didn’t have the time to help them with trying to help so many people at once.
I knew if I had 5 more minutes with them I could help and also help them avoid needless pain, surgeries, injections, and medications. But I didn’t have that time and knowing you could help people but wouldn’t have the time to be able to do that was really soul crushing. It made me question everything I was doing.
I decided to quit my job and travel the world with my wife for a while and I wasn’t sure I would ever return to physical therapy or rehab. Eventually I decided I did want to make a return, but I had to do it my way.
We would focus on high quality one on one care hands on care with a doctor of physical therapy and not the techs, aides, or assistants other companies use. We also decided to be a high touch clinic and try to go out of our way to treat the person first, patient second. We give 15 min phone calls to make sure we are a good fit before clients ever come in. Then we give a free discovery visit that I like to explain is like a medical first date. We can make sure we can help you and you can make sure you want to work with us.
Because of our focus on customer service and top notch quality care we have grown very fast in a short period of time we have added several team members and now have expanded into sports recovery, massage, and fascial stretch therapy too.
More importantly we have a fun environment where patients like to visit and providers enjoy, knowing they can give the type of care that patients deserve. And because of this we have built a reputation of delivering results while helping people get back to everything they want, need, and love to do; even when no one else could help them.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hello everyone! I am physical therapist, movement jedi, and best selling author Dr. Jamie Bovay. I own KinetikChain Denver Physical Therapy where we help people in Denver quickly recover from pain or injury so they can stay active in their favorite sport/hobby, continue exercising, and get back to what they love to do. I started my own business because I wanted to show everyone a higher level of care was available. We are striving to set the new standard in healthcare. If we do our job we will be the front line in between our patients and unneeded pain and medical procedures and will be helping people live a healthier more active life and keeping them from the pain and frustrations of the sub-par medical system. Therefore it is our job to not only do our best professionally, but also connect emotionally with our patients to improve their pain, frustrations, limitations, and our responsibility to do our absolute best to give our customers the best life possible.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Firstly, I’d say the key is not thinking that just because everyone else does it that you should do it. In my field there are constant complaints that therapists don’t spend much one-on-one time with their patients, or that the patient spent most of their time with a tech, aide, or assistant instead of the actual physical therapist. And the worst complaint, that is just a slap in the face to me and my profession, is that physical therapy doesn’t work.
It does work. It’s just the system the patients saw these providers in won’t allow for the type and amount of care needed to allow the physical therapy to work.
Delivering the type of care that patients complain about is a necessity for many PT businesses because of the limitations of working with insurances who dictate how you get paid.
So we had to figure out how not to let the insurance companies interfere with the type of care that allows people to actually improve from their injuries. We decided to not accept insurance and because of that we can give the type of care that gets people better quickly, and that they love.
We also now have the time to really be there for our patients and go the extra mile whenever we can. We have grown quickly because we didn’t follow everyone else and decided which path was right for us.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Finding a different way to deliver results. Nobody really wants our product (physical therapy), it’s a grudge purchase. Nobody wakes up on Jan 1 and says for their resolution “I’d like to get physical therapy this year”.
Generally the experience around this grudge purchase is awful. You go in, get rushed through a clinic with multiple people lined up at the same time, and feel like you barely had time with the physical therapist, without really getting what you needed to help your injury.
We had to find a way not only to deliver the best physical therapy but to improve the experience of physical therapy. Phone calls, sending gifts in the mail before they arrive, playing their favorite music in the clinic, offering water / sparkling water / coffee when they arrive, etc. Focusing on the experience has helped to set us apart, get us more referrals, and get us more 5 star reviews which has added fuel to the fire for our growth.
We look forward to meeting you, getting to know you and your problems and getting you back to doing just exactly what you love!
