We recently connected with Dr. Gloria Okere and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Gloria, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I have always been an individual that looked for ways to help others. It became a hobby of mine, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when I found myself working from home for two years. During this time, I wanted to make myself more beneficial to my community while working at a full-time job and writing my doctoral dissertation at the same time. I then contacted a colleague of mine, and we started the organization L &G Mental Health Housing and Resources. The mission of our organization is meaningful because it is essential that individuals feel empowered and take control of their own destiny that brings them joy and happiness.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been in the realm of education for over ten years which has afforded me the opportunity to establish rapport with students and families alike. During the COVID pandemic, there was an escalated need for housing and mental health services in the city of Houston, which caused a direct increase for these services. As of today, L&G Mental Health Housing and Resources has helped over 300 hundred individuals regarding educational resources and monetary funding towards housing and mental health services. What I am most proud of is my commitment towards empowering my community and assisting the residents of Houston towards living a healthy and fruitful lifestyle. I want individuals to know that with assistance, each person is capable of taking control of his or her life which then allows them the ability to engage in positive steps towards every day activities.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met my cofounder/business partner in my doctoral program at Texas Southern University. We shared a similar class but we did not engage in any personal conversations until a semester later. My cofounder, Mrs. Bush and I had similar goals and shared various experiences towards our education, and mental health services that we previously were a part of. Mrs. Bush shares the same mission as myself as it relates to our community and I am fortunate that our paths cross.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Our organization builds rapport with members in our community where individuals are able to subscribe to our website and contact us as needed. We also do quarterly follow up emails where we check in with individuals’ we have assisted regarding monetary funding for updates to make sure one is maintaining stability.
