We recently connected with Dr. Evelyn Roberts and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Evelyn , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
Starting my private practice arose as a leap of faith. During the pandemic, I worked for an agency while pursuing a Ph.D. in social work. Balancing work responsibilities and being there for my children, who were also grappling with the challenges of the pandemic, became a significant priority for me. Although I cherished the work I was doing, I yearned for more time to focus on completing my Ph.D. And with my experience and clinical license (LCSW) in hand, I realized I had the ability to venture into independent practice. Little did I know this decision would evolve into a heartfelt mission.
Dr. Evelyn , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My primary goal is to collaborate with clients, tailoring their treatment to help them reach their fullest potential. In my private practice, Four Thirteen Counseling Services, I provide counseling services and support aspiring social workers and counselors entering the mental health field. Offering clinical supervision, I assist them in accumulating the necessary hours towards their clinical license, helping them navigate and excel in their professional journey.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
For the past two years, I have embarked on a journey as a business owner, encountering numerous challenges that have tested and propelled me in unique ways. Through navigating the financial hurdles inherent to entrepreneurship and overcoming the daily obstacles, I have developed a deep understanding of the significance of my cause and profession. I envision a future where mental health is readily accessible to all, and I am dedicated to empowering others to join me in this pursuit.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Since opening my practice, I have impacted the lives of those who have experienced addiction, depression, anxiety, anger, low self-esteem, grief and loss, relationship issues, and other challenges. However, the challenge I have yet to conquer eliminating is the financial strain that comes with seeking help.
A big part of my business has been to strive to make my sessions affordable so that paying for services does not become a stressor for my clients. Lately, my vision extends further as I aspire to establish a non-profit organization to enhance and expand these efforts.
