Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr Emily Loveland. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dr Emily , appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
After 2 years of prepping with the small business association I took the leap to purchase a building, renovate it and open a 5000 square foot day spa. Opening day was March 9, 2020. After one glorious week of business the world shut down. The fear was real that I would go bankrupt before my company even got a chance to try. Fortunately my business advisor, Harriet Parker, didn’t let me over borrow or over extend my finances. She said “plan for the worst”. Because of her great advice, Sage survived. My tiny company has grown to 33 employees and exceeded our original projection by 250%
Dr Emily , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began as an Athletic Trainer taping ankles in undergrad, then Massage Therapy school, followed by Chiropractic school. Hands-on healing is my gift. My treatment style is unique by blending a variety of soft-tissue techniques, acupuncture and the chiropractic adjustment. This multidisciplinary approach is successful in the treatment room and as a business model. Sage is a collaboration of like minded practitioners in the industries of beauty, medicine and movement. The Collective Culture benefits the staff, our guests and the community.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Growth comes from preparation, being smart with finances, asking for help, leading by example, creating fair but firm policies, providing a consistent environment and most importantly being kind. The foundation of Sage is built on relationships. I strive to be supportive of my staff, offering generous financial compensation and deep appreciation for a job well done. In turn a happy, harmonious staff creates a welcoming, elevated guest experience. It’s a win win
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Continued success comes from evolving our practices, updating our space, staying current with trends, but always holding firm to our foundational mission of providing a holistic, hands-on approach to well-being..
