We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Desiree Barrionuevo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Desiree, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
One defining moment in my professional journey happened early in my doctoral studies. Until that point, I often struggled with impostor syndrome, wondering if I could do the meaningful work I envisioned. Through my doctoral program, especially during clinical training, I realized I was not alone in those self-doubts. Some of my colleagues shared the same struggles, and hearing their honesty made me feel seen and less isolated.
A turning point came during a clinical case that challenged me professionally. It was the first time I truly saw how powerful therapeutic presence and empathy could be. Afterward, my supervisor affirmed how I handled the situation, and something clicked. I stopped waiting to feel “ready enough” and started trusting in the skills and passion I had already developed. From then on, I stepped into my role with a renewed confidence that has continued to shape and enrich my career. That mindset shift helped me quiet the self-doubt by embracing that growth often comes when we believe in ourselves, especially when things do not go as planned. It reminded me how important it is to stay committed to your path and never give up on yourself, even in moments of uncertainty.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I know firsthand how hard it can be to ask for help. As a teenager, I struggled with anxiety and depression, but I hesitated to seek support because of the stigma around mental health. When I finally did start therapy, it changed everything. It helped me understand my worth, gave me tools to cope, and ultimately inspired me to become a therapist myself. That breakthrough led me to create Serenity Collaborative Therapy, where I now help others find their path to healing.
I work with adolescents, young adults, and families in Plantation, Florida, and virtually across the state. I specialize in relationships and social-emotional learning, offering individual, couples, and family therapy tailored to each person’s needs. Whether you are facing a major life transition, feeling stuck, or struggling in your relationships, my goal is to create a space where you feel supported, understood, and empowered to move forward. What makes my work different is how truly collaborative it is—we are in it together. I am here to help you process your lived experiences, uncover your strengths, and take steps toward the life you truly want. I am most proud of being able to help people rediscover peace, direction, and hope. If you are ready for something to shift, I would be honored to walk with you on your journey.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absolutely. Becoming a therapist has been one of the best decisions of my life. The journey has not always been easy, but it felt right every step of the way. This work aligns with my values, and I feel incredibly grateful to support people during some of their most vulnerable and meaningful moments. I truly love what I do. It is more than a job to me—it is a calling. Getting to grow alongside my clients and see their breakthroughs makes this work deeply fulfilling.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Authenticity and self-awareness are some of the most important qualities in this field. In therapy, who you are matters as much as what you know. Clients connect with genuineness, not perfection. Being present, empathetic, and grounded while managing your emotions and boundaries is key. Self-care is also essential. Burnout is common, so taking care of your well-being allows you to help others. Success in this field is not about having all the answers. It is about being human and showing up with compassion.
