We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. David & Sheryl Iszler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. David & Sheryl, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
No growth happens in your comfort zone. We had a successful chiropractic practice and weight loss center in Casper, WY. However, after 24 years of practicing there, we were ready for a change. We had been vacationing in the Phoenix area for several years and fell in love with the Valley, developing several close friendships in the area. We frequently talked about wanting to move here and open a new practice rather than waiting several years to retire here. In 2017, after much prayer on the topic, we decided to pull the trigger and make it happen. Shortly after making our decision, we were approached by another chiropractor who wanted to purchase our practice. We closed on the sale of our practice in June, 2018. In July, we sold our house, packed all our belongings, and moved to Glendale.
It took several months to get our office ready to open, so we had to live on our savings. Trinity Chiropractic opened March, 2019. As we began to build our new practice in a completely new city, we had many sleepless nights wondering if we made the right decision to sell our previous practice and move to start a new one. With much prayer, we came to the understanding that God would not have called us to come here and fail. We put our faith in Him and in ourselves and pushed forward to build our dream practice.
One year after opening Trinity Chiropractic a global pandemic was declared. We had planned for many different contingencies, but a pandemic was not on the list. There were many more sleepless nights as we continued to push forward. God continued to provide and we made it through the hardest year of our lives.
In January, 2021 we decided to open the weight loss portion of our practice. This decision was, in large part, due to people gaining weight while being stuck at home due to the pandemic and having the knowledge that obesity is a major factor in negative COVID outcomes. We felt called to help more people, as we had previously operated the largest weight loss practice in Wyoming.
So, how did aesthetics become part of Trinity Chiropractic? Our daughter was living in Tennessee while her husband was in the army. She became a licensed aesthetician and began a successful aesthetics practice while living there. When her husband was discharged from the army, they moved to Glendale and she came to work with us in June, 2021. She is very talented and has quickly built her clientele and and has expanded her services.
Trinity Chiropractic has continued to grow and now have reached the point where we have had to begin the search to hire another doctor to work in our office to keep up with demand.
We have always believed that no growth happens in your comfort zone, but have never before pushed ourselves to become so uncomfortable in order to grow so much. We have also come to embrace our mantra, “I don’t follow dreams. I hunt goals.” Without taking that giant leap of faith, living here would still be a dream.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a child, I struggled with severe recurring headaches. When my parents become aware of how the headaches were affecting my life, they took me to a chiropractor. From the very first adjustments, my headaches subsided and shortly became nothing more than a bad memory. Growing up, I took for granted that chiropractic could help me with nearly every physical complaint I had. When I was in college and needed to look forward to what type of career I wanted to pursue, I wanted to do something where I could make a positive impact in the world and help as many people as possible. Chiropractic was the natural choice for me.
When I began my graduate studies, I learned how chiropractic is so much more than pain relief. Everything in your body is controlled by the nervous system. Correcting spinal misalignments allows your nervous system to function properly, enhancing your health from the inside out. Many health conditions that do not respond to medical care can be helped through chiropractic.
Over the years, the opioid epidemic began to destroy more and more lives every day. Witnessing the damage these drugs wreak on individuals, families and communities, Sheryl and I made it our mission to help as many people as possible to avoid dependence on these dangerous drugs.
Trinity Chiropractic offers long-term solutions to many painful conditions, combining gentle and specific chiropractic care, state-of-the-art therapies and spinal rehabilitation to correct the underlying causes of pain rather than merely chasing your symptoms. We help you get back to doing the things you love to do.
We also offer a doctor-supervised nutritional weight loss program and FDA-approved body contouring laser to help shed fat while maintaining muscle mass.
Our daughter, Taylor is a licensed aesthetician. She joined our practice in June, 2021 and offers a variety of aesthetics services to help you look as good on the outside as we help you feel on the inside.
We are a one stop shop to help you regain and maintain your health and overall wellbeing.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Anyone who has opened their own business knows it is not easy. There are many sleepless nights along the way.
We opened Trinity Chiropractic in March, 2019. We thought we had prepared for nearly every possible contingency. We were on an amazing growth trajectory. Then came COVID. Within days of celebrating Trinity Chiropractic’s first anniversary the world practically shut down as a pandemic swept over the globe. People were told to stay home and only go out into public if absolutely necessary. We quickly adapted by incorporating CDC guidelines to make our office as safe as possible for our patients and staff. There was a temporary dip in our practice, but we quickly recovered.
Obesity is a major factor affecting negative outcomes for COVID-19. There was also a growing trend of people gaining more and more weight as they were stuck at home for months. Prior to moving to Arizona, we had a very successful weight loss clinic in Wyoming. We decided to use our knowledge in this field to help people improve their health by losing weight, so we added weight loss services to our practice in January, 2021. So far, our weight loss clients have lost over 4,000 pounds.
One positive thing that came out of the past 2 years is that more people are realizing that health does not come from a pill bottle and that they need to take more responsibility for their health. They are becoming more proactive and are beginning to embrace wellness.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Networking has definitely been the most effective strategy in growing our business. As soon as we completed our move from Wyoming to Arizona and settled into our new home, we began seeking out networking groups to join. Six months before opening our practice we joined a BNI chapter and the Glendale Chamber of Commerce. Shortly thereafter, we were involved in twelve different networking groups.
Developing an extensive network has not only been our greatest source of patients, it has also helped us to connect with many different businesses that we feel comfortable referring to as well as using ourselves. One unexpected benefit to our involvement in so many networking groups is that we have developed many close friendships that we never would have had the opportunity for without them.
