We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Clara Clark. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Clara below.
Dr. Clara , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
Starting my own podcast and talk show “Xceptional Talk with Dr. Clark” was an exciting and rewarding endeavor, and I haven’t reached my desired level.
My initial decision, of course, was the decision to start. This began with a desire to connect with others, share unique perspectives, or create content that has a lasting impact. The idea of interviewing people from all walks of life was an excellent approach because it brings diverse perspectives and rich conversations to the table, something that listeners crave.
For me, the initial decision would be driven by curiosity and a genuine interest in hearing people’s stories. It’s not just about the platform or the reach, but about creating an authentic space for open dialogue.
What I learned about a podcast is choosing my niche or theme. It had to be something I was passionate about, but also something that resonates with an audience. In this case, interviewing people from all walks of life is a broad yet captivating focus. I would ensure that the conversations are anchored in universal human experiences—such as personal growth, overcoming challenges, or cultural stories—while leaving room for a variety of
experiences.
While interviewing people from all walks of life, I would look for a balance of people who can share stories that are relatable yet diverse in experience, from experts in their fields to everyday individuals with powerful, unique stories to tell.
Finding consistency was a challenge and scheduling regular interviews, particularly when you’re trying to coordinate with guests who may have varying schedules. In the early stages, it can be hard to maintain the consistency needed to keep your podcast running smoothly. Building that momentum takes time and planning.
Building an Audience Even though the demand for podcasts has grown, competition is fierce. One of the most common challenges podcasters may face is standing out in a saturated market. I need to put in extra effort to market my podcast, build community, and create content that engages listeners. Many podcasters underestimate how much work goes into the promotion and community-building side.
Balancing Content Creation with Life Balancing the time it takes to produce each episode with my personal life or other professional commitments is a common challenge. When you’re doing everything—interviewing, editing, promoting, and even writing show notes—it can become overwhelming.
What I Would Do Differently
If I could start over, I would probably dedicate more time to planning out the first few months of episodes. In the beginning, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of recording and publishing, but having a strategic vision for the types of guests and topics you want to cover can help maintain focus and coherence in my content.
Additionally, I would emphasize the importance of growing a supportive community from the start. Podcasting is not just about publishing content—it’s about fostering relationships with listeners and guests. So, engaging your audience early and often through social media, email lists, or live events (even virtual ones) would be a priority.
Advice for Young Professionals Starting Their Own Practice
Start Small but Think Big Don’t be intimidated by the scale of the endeavor. Start with what you have—a simple microphone and a solid idea. You can always upgrade your equipment and expand your reach over time.
Consistency Is Key In podcasting (and any business venture), consistency is one of the most important factors in building trust and maintaining an audience. This means releasing episodes regularly, whether that’s weekly or bi-weekly, and making sure the quality stays high.
Learn as You Go The world of podcasting and content creation is constantly evolving. Don’t wait until you have everything perfect before you start. The best way to learn is by doing. Get comfortable with experimentation and iteration.
Authentic People listen to podcasts because they want to connect with others. Authenticity can’t be overstated. Be true to your own voice, and don’t be afraid to show vulnerability or share your personal experiences
Network and Build Relationships Relationships are everything, both with your guests and your listeners. Take the time to network with others in the industry, attend podcasting events, or even collaborate with other creators. Relationships can lead to more opportunities down the line
Don’t Forget the Business Side If your podcast is part of a broader career or professional practice, don’t neglect the business side. Develop a basic understanding of marketing, monetization, and legal issues around intellectual property (like licensing music or using copyrighted content).
Starting a podcast is a journey. It takes time, effort, and a bit of grit to make it successful. But the rewards—connecting with fascinating people, building a loyal audience, and honing your communication skills—are worth it.

How I got into Podcasting; It all began during the pandemic when I was encouraged by my friends to do a podcast. They told me that we all come to you and you are always motivating, encouraging, caring, and supportive of others. The information you share with us other people should hear it too. So, eventually I did. I initially began my podcast about Special Education to boost my advocacy services but as time passed I realized that my conversation with potential guests evolved into something different. It was meaningful and interesting. My audience was growing more than I expected.
How I Got Into Education and Special Education
My path to education started with a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of students, especially those who face unique challenges. I have always been driven by a belief that every student—regardless of their background or learning needs—deserves access to a high-quality education and opportunities for success. I got a promotion to be a Coordinator in Career and Technical Education (CTE) and supporting students with exceptionalities, who often face additional barriers in the classroom and beyond in the workplace.
My experience includes both hands-on teaching and leadership roles, which have given me a well-rounded perspective on the educational landscape. My passion for Education was a driving force behind my podcast. As a Department Chair, I lead a team of educators, collaborating on curriculum design, professional development, and ensuring that our department provides the support and services that meet the diverse needs of our students.
What I Do and the Impact I Have
As a Podcaster, I interview people from all walks of life and backgrounds. It is impacting because I have an opportunity to speak with people who have a story to tell. It has become healing for some who never opened up to others.
In my career, I oversee the development and delivery of career technical education programs tailored for students with disabilities and exceptional learning needs. This includes ensuring that these students receive the specialized support, resources, and accommodations they need to thrive academically and professionally. By integrating hands-on vocational training, job-readiness skills, and practical career exploration, I help students transition from high school into the workforce or post-secondary education. However, I wanted to use my skill set to help others that have been struggling with their rights as parents and opportunities for their children with disabilities. I wanted my Podcast to be a resource as well as a platform for those without a voice.
Key Services and Products I Provide:
My Key Services doesn’t always align with my profession. I want to be diverse and inclusive with people for my Podcast. In my career I implement CTE curricula that meets the needs of students with a variety of exceptionalities. This includes vocational training, life skills development, and work-based learning opportunities.
On the other hand, I seek out opportunities to hear those unique and inspiring stories that otherwise might not have happened.
Professional Development for Educators: I provide ongoing training and resources for teachers and staff to support inclusive practices and best practices for working with students with disabilities.
Job-Readiness Programs: One of my main goals is to bridge the gap between education and employment for students with exceptionalities. I lead programs focused on life skills, resume building, interview preparation, and job placement assistance.
Advocacy and Leadership: I advocate for policy and practices that foster inclusivity, access, and equity for students with exceptionalities, ensuring they have the same opportunities for success as their peers.
The Problems I Solve: As a Podcaster, I’ve learned that there are many people who are willing to disclose their problems and experiences. With that being the case, has opened up others who may have experienced similar issues but felt alone. So, I might not have solved the problem but I brought about a positive outcome towards their healing and happiness. In my career,
Lack of Access to Career Development Opportunities: Many students with exceptionalities struggle to access vocational training and career development resources. I create pathways that ensure they are well-prepared for the workforce, with both practical skills and soft skills needed to succeed.
Barriers to Inclusion: I work to dismantle barriers in the classroom and beyond, advocating for inclusive educational practices and ensuring that students with disabilities have the same opportunities for career exploration and technical education as other students.
Support for Educators: Many educators are not always equipped with the specific strategies and tools to effectively teach students with exceptionalities. I provide targeted professional development to help staff understand and implement inclusive teaching strategies, ensuring all students are engaged and supported.

I thank God for that gift to make people feel comfortable sharing and accepting of my existence to help them grow. What sets me apart from other Educators, I don’t just focus on academic success— I prioritize practical, real-world skills that can help students gain independence and thrive in life after school. My deep understanding of both special education and career technical education allows me to bridge the gap between these two fields in ways that benefit students, families, and educators. I’m also committed to creating a supportive, collaborative environment within my department. As a leader, I strive to foster a culture of inclusion, respect, and shared learning among my team, so that we can provide the best possible outcomes for our students.
