We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Chana Campbell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Chana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s go back in time a bit – can you share a story of a time when you learned an important lesson during your education?
During my time in academia, I learned great lessons such as resiliency and learning to embrace my personal journey. My path to becoming Dr. Campbell was neither clear nor direct. There were challenges, trials, and even life tragedies. There were also moments of celebration and triumph. I entered college very certain about my career path and major. After a year and a half, I realized that wasn’t what I wanted to pursue. I took six months off to figure things out. While I was grappling with my next steps, my classmates were progressing in their studies and starting to look at internships. I felt truly lost and was deeply disappointed in my inability to “figure it out” like everyone else. I learned to embrace who I was and where my journey was taking me. I had to stop comparing myself to others. Once I accepted what was happening, I was able to shift my focus. This is when I began to walk in my truth. I chose a path that was not always popular, but it was the best choice for me.
Throughout those years of seeking my purpose, I discovered my true self. Reflecting on where I stand today, I can see how those years shaped me into the woman I am now. Resilience and tenacity were skills that I honed along the way, leading to my eventual success. I learned to recover quickly when I fell short of my goals. When things didn’t go as planned, I had to learn how to be flexible and find alternative routes. I have always been determined. When I set my mind on a goal, failure is not an option. No matter how challenging the path became, I was unwavering in my determination to see things through.
My faith in God grew stronger during this period. When I returned to college as a graduate student, it wasn’t just about the next job or money. It was about pursuing a calling on my life and ensuring that I was equipped with the tools to achieve my goal of becoming a therapist. At that time, I was a mother of three and held a full-time job. To say that this was stressful at times would be an understatement. There were moments when I questioned whether it was worth it and whether I should continue. Yet, a still, small voice within me urged me to get back up and persevere. There were tears shed, long days endured, and late nights worked through. I trusted God and what I felt He was calling me to do. He gave me the strength for the journey, and in the end, I emerged victorious.
The skills I acquired during my formative years have significantly contributed to the woman I am today. As a business owner, resilience and tenacity are essential traits. Learning to navigate and problem-solve when things don’t go as planned is paramount. Trusting my instincts and having confidence in my decision-making abilities are necessary. Believing in the vision God has bestowed upon me and summoning the courage to trust His guidance even when the next steps seem unclear has altered the trajectory of my life. My academic pursuits laid the foundation for who I am as an individual and how I navigate being a business owner.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn is that life will go the way I planned it. We often have visions of what life will look like, where we will be at a certain point in our lives, and what the journey may look like. Now I definitely see nothing wrong with having a plan. I just had to learn that at times, the plan may change. While I may have these expectations, life may not unfold in that way. I have to be flexible and able to pivot. That four year degree may take six years. That first business may not be the thing that I was supposed to do long term. What I wanted five years ago may not be a good fit for who I am and what I want now.
I had to learn to make room for life when it happens. Most of the major battles I faced on my journey were things that I never imagined I would have to face. While striving for my degree, I was confronted with illness, the heartache of losing loved ones, an unexpected job loss, academic setbacks, and the trials of being a new entrepreneur. . Although these hurdles didn’t derail my goal attainment, they compelled me to make room for the unexpected and refine my approach in the face of life’s adversities.
