Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Brandy Brown, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, LNC, PMHNP-BC. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dr. Brandy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
I was 15 and in high school in San Diego. My high school was Abraham Lincoln High and we had a health program set-up with one of the major health systems in the city. It was called Mediversity. We did a little test to see what we would be good at based on the jobs they would let us have then we were assigned to place. They would drop us off and pick us up. I was a unit secretary on a hospital floor answering phones and administration stuff. I loved it and was so happy to get my check every two weeks in class from it. We also received high school credit.
Dr. Brandy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a doctorate prepared Nurse practitioner. I have been in healthcare since I was 15 year old and have always aspired to be a medical professional. I have always loved helping people and sharing my knowledge. I have been a Nurse Practitioner over 11 years and prior to that I was in Nursing for about 9 years. I have worked at almost every level of patient care to get where I am now. I have obtained 5 degrees and several certifications along the way.
I now work for myself, and have my own medical clinic. I have been providing patient care to all ages for various medical reasons. My focus though is Holistic approach no matter the reason I see you. My theory is if your mind is not well, your spirit is not settled then your body is not well. With all patients, I see in person; and on telehealth I assess and treat the whole person. I believe in medicine but there are so many other ways to treat patients such as herbal options, positive affirmations, yoga, Pilates, therapy, exercise, etc. I also provide care to my fellow Veterans to be sure they get what is needed related to disability, that they lack through larger companies with contracts and even from the VA health system.
I offer medical care for various conditions to all ages, mental health, some spa services, herbal natural candles (my own original blends), herbal teas, and yoni eggs. I also provide professional mentoring, clinic start up help, precepting, telehealth, and contract medical care for other companies..
I am so proud of how far I have come, even when there are times I feel like it’s a hindrance to being just about me, the individual or all people see about me. But I want others to know I am just a regular person who has struggled , a mother, a person who loves to laugh, debate, watch sports, go on trips, go out to eat, decorate her home, go out for drinks; I am just “BRANDY” without the white coat. But I am authentic with my work and outside of it. I am here to make a mark in the world and be remembered as someone who loved others and was passionate about helping others.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe what has helped me is just being honest and genuine. Many medical professionals, now are trying to be social media famous or sell outcomes that are not always realistic. Also looking at more than just medicine and guidelines, has helped many of my patients grow and be healthier. I practice what I teach my patients. I have even lived in their shoes in many instances. Just showing them I am interested in treating the whole person and sharing just a bit of my own experiences has helped them.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I have been through many trials in my life and career that many have no clue about. All they see now is the outcome of who I became, and still striving to be for the future. I had my son in my early 20’s and married his dad for a short period. During that time I had put my education on hold. He made the money as I took care of my son, definitely putting my trust in another for my future. Eventually I went back to school for my LPN education, and one night while I was gone to school; he picked up and left me and my child. I had no money and soon became homeless. I was broke and homeless soon afterI became very depressed. I had no clue what to do because I trusted someone with mine and my son’s well-being. But I pulled it together after a few months, finished school, found a job, and a home. Then I flourished from there to become where I am today. I just want everyone to know, Trials will come but it’s how you use them to grow is what becomes the true focus.
