Dr Bobbi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.

I graduated from Howard University School of Dentistry and went right into a General Practice Residency in Brooklyn NY. During that residency I found my love for clinical Orthodontics. Applied and attended the 3 year Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics Program at Maimonides Jewish Medical Center. I worked for an Orthodontist on the Upper West Side as I built my practice. As my practice grew I took one day (out of my 6 day week) away from the Topal orthodontics and added it to Aces Braces (my office) until I was full time! Opening my first practice was not as challenging as maintaining it! The practice was open but …where were the patients? I connected with dentists in the area, I connected with insurance companies, I connected with organizations , I paid for SEO but nothing worked as well as word of mouth! This is STILL what makes my practice run! Once my landlord saw how crowded my waiting area was he increased my rent by 1000/month. I would say that landlords and renting my spaces had been one of my biggest challenges! This happened to me twice! I then purchased the building where my practice resides til this day. I would advise professionals that are looking to open their own practice to have their leases and contracts looked over by their lawyers just for extra security. I would advise them to own their practice sooner rather than later to build and increase the worth of the practice.

Dr Bobbi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

My name is Dr Bobbi Peterson and I have been known as the Celebrity Orthodontist but now I am Dr Bobbi, the inventor of The Big Mouth Toothbrush Co. The Big Mouth Toothbrush Sonic toothbrush has a patented wider brush head to cover more surface are. I worked with a patent lawyer and a team of engineers to produce the perfect prototype. We launched in January of 2022. We were on Shark Tank in 2023. We are available DTC, Amazon, many dental offices in boutiques. I saw an increase in periodontitis and ginvgivitis but the latest advances in electronic toothbrushes were getting smaller and small. I saw the need for a powerful toothbrush that could improve oral health by covering more surface area. Big Mouth has 5 speeds which cater to all dental needs. Now Big Mouth has expanded to providing full dental kits which include : manual toothbrushes, floss picks, tongu scrapers and travel cases.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?

If I could go back I absolutely would choose Orthodontics! This specialty allows me to pursue my other dream of being an inventor!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

Once Big Mouth scaled up we decided to work with a larger marketing company. This was one of my biggest mistakes. From my experience, larger marketing companies do not put energy or much time into smaller businesses. I had one employee tell me that they would check my ads “every week or so”. Small bisiness owners know that this is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. This was a big mistake on my part and I love alot of money.
