Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A Journey of Resilience
Life has a way of testing us when we least expect it. My journey of resilience began the day my twins were born. They arrived at just 24 weeks, a moment filled with both joy and fear as we faced the unknown.
From the very start, our lives were transformed. One of our daughters, Kylie Duffy required a tracheostomy, a g-tube for feeding, and depended on a trilogy ventilator for her fragile health. Those first few months in the NICU were an emotional rollercoaster. Each day brought new challenges, and we learned to celebrate the smallest victories—her first breath without assistance, the day she was strong enough to hold my finger.
Navigating the complexities of her medical needs was daunting. There were sleepless nights spent by her side, countless doctor visits, and moments of sheer exhaustion. But through it all, I discovered an inner strength I didn’t know I had. I became an advocate, not just for my daughter but for other families facing similar battles. This experience ignited a passion within me to create something meaningful.
It was from this place of resilience that Horizon Care Partners was born. I wanted to ensure that other families receiving care felt supported, understood, and empowered. My personal journey became the heartbeat of our mission, guiding our commitment to compassionate, individualized care.
Every challenge I faced only strengthened my resolve. I learned to lean on my community, to seek help when needed, and to embrace vulnerability as a source of strength. My daughters taught me the true meaning of resilience—not just surviving, but thriving in the face of adversity.
Today, I am proud to lead a team that shares this vision. We strive to create a safe haven for families, drawing from our own experiences to provide the highest quality of care. Each story we encounter reminds us why we do what we do, and fuels our dedication to making a difference.
Resilience is not just about enduring hardship; it’s about using those experiences to inspire and uplift others. I am grateful for the journey that has led me here, and I am committed to ensuring that no family feels alone in their struggles.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A Lesson I Had to Unlearn: Embracing Vulnerability
In the early days of my journey as a mother to medically fragile twins, I held onto the belief that I had to be strong and composed at all times. I thought that showing vulnerability was a sign of weakness, especially as I navigated the complexities of caring for my daughter, Kylie Duffy, who required a tracheostomy and a ventilator. I felt immense pressure to appear in control, both for myself and for those around me.
This mindset was deeply rooted in my upbringing. I was taught to be self-reliant and to face challenges head-on without showing distress. I believed that if I didn’t maintain a façade of strength, I would burden others and lose their support. However, this approach quickly became exhausting and isolating.
As the days turned into months in the NICU, I realized that this belief was doing more harm than good. I was overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and struggling to cope with the realities of my daughter’s condition. It was during one particularly difficult night, surrounded by the sterile beeping of machines, that I had an epiphany. I broke down in tears, allowing myself to feel the weight of my fears and uncertainties.
In that moment of vulnerability, I reached out to a fellow NICU parent. Sharing our experiences and fears created an unexpected bond, and I realized that by opening up, I not only found solace but also strengthened our community. I began to see that vulnerability is not a weakness; it’s an essential part of being human. It fosters connection and allows others to support us in meaningful ways.
This lesson transformed my perspective. I learned to embrace vulnerability as a source of strength. I started sharing my struggles openly, both with friends and in my professional life. This shift not only helped me heal but also empowered others to do the same. It became a cornerstone of the culture at Horizon Care Partners. We prioritize creating an environment where families feel safe expressing their fears and challenges without judgment.
Unlearning the notion that vulnerability is weak has been one of the most liberating experiences of my life. It taught me that strength lies in authenticity and connection. Today, I encourage others to embrace their vulnerabilities, knowing that it leads to greater compassion, understanding, and ultimately, resilience.
