Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Angelia Williams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dr. Angelia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
Initially, I became a Music Education major because I loved music and children equally. I understand what a powerful outlet that music can be for children, especially when they grow up in an environment that is full of negativity. Music was my God-given escape from poverty, drugs, violence, and everything else that was going on in my neighborhood growing up. I wanted to be a conduit and offer that escape to children that needed an outlet that was positive and freeing to the spirit. However, I had a dear friend that was also a Music Education major, and had begun vocal coaching during our undergrad career. She took another job in the store where she was teaching and asked me if I ” would like to take her clients because I would make an amazing vocal coach?” I told her “sure” because I needed the money at the time. She referred all of her clients to me, and it was amazing! I loved coaching, and decided to stick with it. At first, I only had 8 clients that I served. However, I loved it and grew the business! When I moved out of Milwaukee I had 52 clients and 2 locations that were a part of my studio.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Performance Psychologist, Professional Vocal Coach, Consultant, and Independent Recording Artist. I not only coach singers in vocal technique, but I work with performing artist psychologically as well. I approach vocal coaching and performance coaching from a whole person perspective that includes the mind, body, and spirit. I am a multi-disciplinarian with an undergraduate degree in music with a concentration in the voice, a masters in Psychology, and my doctorate studies were in Performance Psychology. I work with voice clients in vocal pedagogy, but I also work with all performing artist to overcome state anxiety (also called Music Performance Anxiety), self-esteem challenges, confidence building, etc.. There are many skills that singers and other performing artist need to have for optimal outcomes, and many of those things are psychological. On the scholar side of things, my research is in performance and how individuals can achieve the results that they are happy with consistently. Of course, the main population that is involved in my research are creative individuals.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start?
Funding? What that? LOL! I started my business during my undergraduate career. That means there was absolutely no money and I didn’t even consider obtaining a loan. I literally built the business with God’s grace and sheer dedication.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think my love for my fellow man and compassion leads to a stronger bond with my client base. There is no cookie cutter plan when it comes to psychology/coaching, and you must be able to apply your knowledge base with a sincere love for humanity. I have always treated my business not only as a business, but a ministry. The opportunity to offer tools that build and increase a person’s craft and overall life experience is an honor, and is a huge responsibility. I have a grateful heart to The Most High God everyday, and I believe that people can actually feel that sincerity.
